Any musicians out there got any tips for making your recordings sound more professional and better quality?

This is a good topic and I am definitely interested if anyone has practical experience with recording and sound editing and mixing. What software is the preferred one for editing?

I'm glad someone is! I record digitally using my pc so I've tried a lot of different software. Most people seem to recommend Audacity which open source and can be downloaded for free. For musicians that can afford it I would personally recommend Cool Edit Pro - though Adacity does have similar built-in functions. I also use low budget practise equipment (ie guitars, amps) as that is all I can afford so any amount of advice from anywhere would be greatly appreciated. I'm interested in all aspects: noise reduction, mixing, mastering, expansion, compression, etc.

Thanks for the info on Audacity and Cool Edit Pro. I hope someday that I will have the opportunity to have my own recording set up. Congratulations on your recording efforts and I hope you succeed. Cheers!!
