Warranty, after sales service, quality, purpose, and price.
1. Check if the brand you like is available world wide.
2. Does it offer an international warranty? How long?
3. How is their after sales service?
4. How's the product quality?
5. You are going to use the laptop for what purpose? Business? Personal? Gaming?
6. How much are you willing to spend?
Three best brand: IBM (Expensive, top quality, 3 years international warranty), Toshiba (Medium price, good quality, 1 year international warranty), HP (Cheap, good quality, 1 year international warranty). For lower end laptop, Compaq, made by the same company as HP.

You should know why you need to buy a laptop and how much your budget is.
My first laptop has low spec which did not cost me much. because I use it for office and internet.
My new laptop I bought has high spec (especially on RAM and graphic and processor). Because I use this laptop for graphic editing and other multimedia which need good spec on graphic and memory also the processor. Other accessory is not my main consideration.

If buying a laptop the very first thing you should look at would be what purpose will you be using the computer for...then you would pick which of the traits fit your needs.
