Last year 812 million lb. of food from China made its way onto Canadian Dinner Tables. China is now Canada's second source of food imports, after the U.S. This has consumers concerned, especially after safety scares about products from China. After Bill Chu got sick from eating Chinese sea-food, he was convinced third world sanitation and quality standards were showing up in Canadian Supermarkets. Malachite Green (a Cancer causing Chemical) is used in China to prevent infection in crowded fish farms. Ottawa has banned the practice and won't allow treated fish to be sold in Canada. But the popular TV show W-Five, bought fish, did their own test, and found contamination from Malachite. Seems like the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has too few Inspectors and too many samples, and Canada has not been looking after our food safety in the manner that we Canadians had hoped.
The Chinese Connection isn't always obvious to the Consumer. Much of whats in the Kitchen carries a 'Product of Canada' label, which only means- at least 51% of manufacturing costs were incurred in Canada.', and most Canadian Corporations refuse to divulge their product sources. A 4 year study on food safety in China concludes that food safety in China is inadequate for the Chinese Population, and for Export. W-Five also reported-'in many cases in China, there is not even a wash-down in the trucks that move the food West. Economics not sanitation is driveing Canadian companies to do business with China.' Presently its almost impossible to find fish in a Canadian Supermarket that is neither Chinese Grown or Chinese Processed.
Captain Highliner ( a Famous Canadian Company) is fishing in many waters, and is processing nearly 1/3 of its fish, such as cod, haddock,Alaskan Pollack,Pacific Salmon, and Bluefish in China.~Patti-Ann Findley~ W-FIVE.
Read the labels and be sure the food is safe before you Buy. Are you concerned about Chinese food in Canadian Supermarkets?

I can understand your concern and I needn't fo deny the issues existing in China's food exports. But I have to say food safety is a global problem,no country can guarantee his exported food is foolproof.China is also the vicim and we ara facing the threat of the exported food from America,Australia and even Canada.Certainly, these countries have more advanced technology in food production and testing than China, but we can not deny China's overall food security.I think we should do more is to help China build a more secure food production system, not just complain it.

I'm sure the Consumers in North America will be doing more to help China with their Sanitation and Poison Chemical Problems. A Boycott of Chinese Products will teach China to "wash their hands" before touching food for export, and will stop China from Exporting food containing North American banned chemicals.

Even though we have all these agencies looking out for our health, we must also watch out for ourselves. We do not buy ANYTHING made in China. I don't even care if it is "Wild" Salmon caught in China and processed in the US. I refuse to buy it. Read your packages.
The BEST way to avoid problems: buy local and do not eat processed food - these also means no frozen fish.

Yes I definately won't eat any of that fish with the Malachite chemical in it. Prime Minister Harper recently announced a Change in the Labeling for 'Product of Canada' soon the label will mean its actually grown and packed in Canada. The country of origin will also be on the Package.

I'll tell you what, I don't trust food from anywhere anymore. The latest was the tomato thing, my god tomatoes of all things. Who can really know what to trust anymore.
