What is Wrong With My Feet?

This weird thing has been happening to my feet for the past few years. I was wondering if anyone knows what it is or what causes it. All of the sudden, my foot will hurt and when I look at it, my toes are bent in funny directions. Like my big toe will be sticking straight up but all the others are down. And I can't move them. But once my toes move back, my foot instantly feels better. Although sometimes right after it is better it happens again immediately. This seems to happen more in cold weather than in hot weather. It has also happened a few times while swimming. My foot will just go into a weird formation and then hurt until it goes back to normal. Has anyone else had this happen? What is this? I almost always wear tennis shoes and I never wear high heels or any type of uncomfortable shoes. I do have rather long and narrow feet, I'm not sure if that influences this. I am shocked because I thought you could only get foot problems from wearing high heels or injuring a foot. Why are my feet doing this?

When that happens it's a muscle spasm. Your muscles tighten up and pull the toes in the direction the muscles are tightening. When this happens I find moving my foot around helps. I also stretch it out once the spasm passes so I don't get more. Sitting with your foot in certain positions will also cause them. They can be very painful.

I was so worried it might be a bone problem, because it is the bones that hurt. But that makes sense, if the muscles are pulling them in weird directions. I try to stretch my foot, but it is hard to exercise those muscles because normally I cannot move my toes independently of each other. I don't normally get this while sitting, but sometimes I do if I'm driving so I guess that explains it. When I'm sitting my feet are almost always in the same position, flat on the ground. But while driving of course they're not.

It certainly sounds like muscle spasms, as I get these same things in my feet. There can be other causes besides sitting with your foot in one position or another, such as low potassium levels which can result from taking diuretics or other medical issues. Neuropathy can also cause muscle spasms, but is less common than low potassium. Check it out with your doctor the next time you see him/her. Sometimes muscle relaxers can help if there is no other apparent cause, such as Flexeril. This medication is intended for short-term use and can help relax the muscles and keep them from going into spasms. Good luck.

Thanks, I will look into that. I know our family has problems with our potassium being too high a lot of times, so that's probably not it in my case (and despite the predisposition towards high potassium, I still love bananas and often have half of one per day which is probably plenty for anyone). But maybe some medication would help it.

Sounds like a cramp of some sort. How old are your tennis shoes? If they are really old, replace them. If they are really new, then maybe there is something going on with the support system and isn't right for your foot.

It's not the shoes, it doesn't matter which ones I've worn. I have not worn the same tennis shoes throughout the years. The current ones are not worn at all yet and are only about 6 months old.

OUCH! I've never heard of this happening but if I was you I would go to the doctor and talked to him/her about it. It sounds like a medical reason or something. Please let me know!

Thanks. It happened again in the pool the other day, but I'll ask the doctor about it next time I go in for something else.

it sounds to me like you are getting muscle cramps a lot like a charley horse in your calves. do you get enough potasium if not try eating at least one banana a day and see if your cramps do not just disappear. also do drink enough water as when you are dehydrated you may also get foot and leg cramps. also do not eat alot of highly salted 'food as that will do the same thing, cause foot and leg 'cramps.lol.
