Buying Referrals & Upgrading Accounts - Is It Worth It?

This is a post directed primarily toward those of you who either use or are familiar with PTC sites. Lately I have noticed many people claiming to have made a lot of extra cash by buying referrals on PTC sites and/or upgrading accounts so that they will have more ads to click. Is this really worth doing? Are you really destined to make a substantially larger amount of money if you buy the upgrade, or are these just exceptional cases? I have wondered about this for quite some time now, as I am always in the lookout for ways to make extra cash online and wondered what the general opinion was on this. Is there really that big of a difference between the standard membership and the upgraded membership?
