I don't have any idea about the other countries..
But In india, All the people those who crossed the Age of 55-60, are elegible for the 30% to 35% reduction in the Rail Fare when they are booking the Tickets.. and when they travel in the Train, if TTR ask for the proof, they have to show their age proof.
And also in the Banks, those senior citizens will get addition percentage of Interest for their deposits and other savings account.
Like that in all area of Senior Citizen's will get special benefits from the government.
Why they have been awarded these benefits..??
-- Since they doesn't have a regular income..
-- Since they doesn't have a people to take care
-- Since they will not be able to survive independently.?
-- any other reasons..
I have indicated some of the points it may or may not relates to the discussion.. if it is wrong, you just indicate the correct things..
And also, these benefits has been given to the people those who are having more money, but the people in the villages, very poor Senior citizens, what was the benefits they used to get from the Governments..?

Hey chennai_b02 This is a very good discussion . I think the suitable and appropriate answer is we should pay respect to our older citizen. By awarding special benefits we are paying tribute to them. Also there are many elder citizen who are living below poverty and they are not in a position to travel due to financial crisis.

In the recent days if you find, only the senior citizens have more money, because they have bought more houses when they are in service, now, the cost of the same grow like anything.. those becomes crores and crores today.. along with that they have been given the extra % of interest in the banks, and extra discount in the Train travel also..
Am i right..?

In theory, the biggest reason a government gives senior cits/pensioners additional benefits is because they have contributed to the weath of the country for a long life through taxes, because they do need extra to have an enjoyable lifestyle considering they now have no income, and because the government wants their votes to be re-elected.
