I actually was a HR Director for about 4 years. I would not be scared of them. We are just as nervous during the interview as you are, if not more. The position has a lot of responsibility to not involve your personal experiences or opinions, I tended to spend a majority of time worrying if I was being too personal. But most HR people are people oriented and tend to be some of the nicest people I've met. Don't worry.

Thanks for the insights, hearing it form the person being in question really helps a lot. But how will you compensate it if the people applying for the job really good in the field but not in interview phase?

Actually if they seemed great on paper (experience wise, references, etc.) but seemed to be a miss in an interview, I would usually get another person's opinion. if that meant a 2nd interview with the supervisor of the particular dept that I was hiring for, the better. After this 2nd interview, it is usually clearer what kind of an employee the person will be and a better assessment can be made. Are you currently looking for work? If so I would just be confident in your skills and knowledge and just be yourself. You can't lose that way. Good Luck!

I wouldn't worry too much about the HR Director where you work. They are so busy worrying about benefits packages, processing applications, etc. Generally, it's not the HR Director that picks out a person to fire, but gets the recommendation from your immediate supervisor or manager. Those are the people to be nervous being around. Not knowing what type of work you do, it's difficult to determine if your immediate supervisor/manager is someone you can trust or not. Generally, these people will back you up unless of course, you really screw up on the job. My opinion, relax around the HR people. If you are interviewing, go in there confident that you can do the job for which you are applying. And if they ask you what your strengths and weaknesses are, remember, my weakness is chocolate. It's a great ice breaker. ;)

Interviews have scared many people I know. You said it julersmith, they have the power. But don't worry because it will make you nervous and you don't want that to happen.Go with a happy and cheerful mood.Remember, the most he can do is not hire you and that's not the end of the world.Right? You will have plenty of chances.
