How has your diet changed with the price of everything rising daily?

Not only is the price of gas rising daily but so does the price of everything that is dependent on oil for transportation. The prices truly scare me. We cut coupons and shop sales. We use the doubling coupons and shop according to the ads. I find that I am not eating the amount of fruits and vegetables that I should due to the expense. I only use milk with my cereal now and rather than coffee I am drinking iced tea since I don't add milk to it. I am diabetic and so many things are already off my list. I know that I need to control my diet but I must save as much as possible for gas so I can get to work. It is a "catch-22" situation here. Have you any ideas for getting more for your dollar and how has your diet changed?

If you have small area - such as flower beds, or containers on the patio, you can grow some of your own vegetables easily. You might want to check http://www.angelfoodministries.com for a hosting location near you. This is basically a food buying coop that distributes food through volunteering churches. They have a specific "menu" each month of food products that you can order in advance and then pick up at your hosting location on a specific day of the month. If I remember correctly, it's around $30 for $60-75 worth of food. You can also purchase additional packages of meat.

I mostly eat a whole foods diet and I don't think I pay that much for the food I eat. The stores I shop at have good, fresh food for an affordable price. One store I shop at has bulk oatmeal, beans, etc, which is great because I can take only what I need. Mostly, I drive my car less to save gas, but I know that isn't always possible for everyone. I have some health problems and I found out that not eating a lot of meat seems to help. Well, meat has gotten so expensive, so I decided to do more vegetarian days. I only eat meat every other day and it really does stretch the groceries a lot farther. 4 servings of beans is only about 50 cents and four servings of tofu is about $1.30. Compare that to 4 servings of beef or chicken. I track my diet on Spark People and find that I am getting enough protein and vitamins on my vegetarian days, too.

I agree with you desertdarlene. I started to modify my eating even before the prices started to rise. Making food from scratch rather than buying pre-processed foods is not only cheaper but healthier. Good for you. I never heard about Spark People before. Do they really help to track your nutrients?

Yes, Spark People is a wonderful place to track all your health needs, connect with people, and learn about nutrition. I love that site. If I stick to their guidelines, I do very well, but if I don't I usually pay for it!

Our diet hasn't changed much yet, but I can see it coming. it's hard with the price of everything rising, and with limited time, to keep eating the same. We had been trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, and we've decided to continue doing that and just cut back on meat.

We have definitely changed the way we buy groceries. Most times, I fix specific dishes and meals that my family loves and no more. We don't experiment that much. Every week, it's the same menu with few changes. Very nutritious with lots of frozen veggies and fresh fruits. Those are healthy and affordable.

I cut down on cooking. Its easy to get food near my place. Cooking is expensive nowsaday. Two packet of rice for me and my two kids cost $5 but if I cook I will have to spent about $10 or more.

Yes, you are correct. Everything is expensive now, and I am afraid of going to super marcket. And now I always buy the sell off things.

yes, this seems to be the way that the world is now; are we entering a recession? everyone has to be careful what they spend money on these days... we wont eat that much different, but this is because we have a ton of food left in our freezer; but we already eat meatless meals such as pasta etc.
