How are you working mylotters coping with the rise in gas and grocery prices? I know few if any employers are giving pay raises, because their costs to run business is increasing also.
I'm retired, so I don't have to go to work and have cut way down on driving. I don't visit friends any more except by telephone. I go to the grocery store when I run out of something I absolutely have to have, and I make a list of all the things I'm getting low on and try to buy enough that I don't have to go to the store for 10 days or two weeks.
I shop online for anything I can't get at the grocery store. When I have a package I have to send out I print postage online (I have a postage scale that I use to weigh ingredients for my soaps and salves etc.) and call for package pick up.
When I have to go to the dr. or some other appointment I make sure I have a list of everything I need to do while I'm out.
I never have been one to spend money on entertainment except to buy take out once or twice a month and maybe rent a movie now and then. I've cut both of those things out.
What have you had to cut back on or cut out altogether?

Isn't it awful!!!!
What we did is start a garden, I'm putting up vegetables every other day.
Also, we have chickens for eggs, and we're going to start raising rabbits. We'll butcher chickens too. What they want for a frier is unreal.
We'll have to buy feed for the rabbits and chickens, but the chicken will get a lot of garden scraps and so will the rabbit.
I'm like you, I know longer make unnecessary trips into town (I live in the country) I wait and do everything at once.
I don't know what we're going to do if something doesn't happen. I guess we'll have to call on the Lord, he said he would feed and clothe us.

Oh how I long to be able to grow a garden, but even if the soil and weather would allow that, I'd have to have a lot of help. I'm able to get around pretty good, but sometimes just taking care of the yard and house are a real challenge.
I grew up on a farm and nothing tastes better than fresh, home grown everything!

Okay SusanLee, explain to me why Granny gave YOU all the gardening ability. I am so jealous. I want a garden so bad but even if i didn't kill all the plants(we both know i would) i am afraid that my back wouldn't allow me to take care of it!

Hi beaddoodler,
What my grandparents did when they couldn't deal with a big garden anymore was get five gallon buckets, put holes in the bottom and filled them with Black Cow and planted their tomatoes and peppers and stuff in them.
I remember they had the prettiest tomatoes.
Hi cj,
I'm not that great at it. Wade is the one that wanted the garden, I just walk down there and play at weeding.
I want to learn to put up pickles but haven't got all the stuff to do it yet.
As for gardening ability. I remember right after I got married the first time Eve gave me a pretty vine that was growing in an old whisky bottle. Me not knowing my butt from a hole in the ground stuck it in a dark cubby hole and couldn't figure out why it turned white. Granny came by one day and I asked her about it, when I showed it to her she just laughed and laughed.
That's when she told me it had to be out in the light. You would think I would have had enough sense to know that.
My German grandmother had plants all over the place too like granny did.
I noticed over the years I always did better with a lot of plants than with just a few, I would over care for the few and kill them everytime.
Don't forget granny and grand dad used five gallon buckets in their later years. With all your pine trees out there it would be hard to till up ground for a garden. Get some buckets, drill holes in them, fill them with Black Cow and grow what ever you like.
At least that way you won't have to deal with all the weeds and watering them will be quicker.

I've been trying to cut down on the driving if I can. I told my client that if she needs me to shop I'll do it on my way to her place. This both allows me to both save on gas and avoid the worse of the heat.
We are also trying to do things like shop on the way home from the roomie's job.
One thing that we are doing is putting money on a gift card at walmart and then getting our gas with it. It saves 3 cents a gallon as well.
Since it took 70 bucks to fill up the car on Sunday, you can understand why I feel that way.

Thanks for those tips. I didn't know you saved on gas at walmart with a gift card. I've got to put that in my bag of tricks.

We are combining everything we can into one or two trips for shopping a week, or I will walk to the store myself when hubby is at work if I forget something. We moved closer to the job so hubby now only drives 4 miles round trip vs. 28 miles. We are cutting every corner that we can, sometimes more than once. We didn't go out much before this started but I'm not taking the kids that many places unless we can get there by bus and I make it into an errand run when we do. I can honestly say that 95% of the extras are out.

I have always lived close to the city. I can't imagine my life any other way. When I need something I can just go and get it right then and them 99% of the time. I'm not sure I could even handle not being in or close to the city. I'd probably go batty LOL, but I would enjoy the quiet from time to time. Luckily the house I'm in for the next few months has some really good neighbors all around so hopefully our next one will too.

I hear a lot of people are moving out of the suburbs into town which makes me shudder. I never even liked living in suburbs, prefer rural, but you do what you have to do. If my property wasn't paid for and I was still working I'd just have to stay here anyway and drive into town because I sure couldn't afford to pay rent or another mortgage.

I could just cry because of the rising costs of everything. We have a pretty strict budget, but we've always managed to have some fun and stuff-- now we are penny pinching to make ends meet. We are robbing Peter to pay Paul ALOT. We are a one income family, and I have considered going back to work-- but I'm so torn. My son has a trach and a g-tube and many medical issues. I would have to put him in an expensive medical day care for me to work, and then I'm not sure with the cost of the daycare and gas that it would even benefit us. I just don't understand why gas has to be so high! It's the same gas from 10 years ago, so why?? In our area more stations are opening up--- WHAT FOR? Gas is so high that people can't pay for it and I don't understand why the need for more gas stations! It makes me so angry.

Some people tell me that I just don't understand economics. I agree with them. I have X amount of money coming in, so I can only have X amount of money going out. It seems any idiot could figure out that if gas gets so high people are doing everything they can to buy less of it that demand will go down and then prices should go down. But the one day that oil prices did go down, gas prices shot up 10 cents a gallon. Makes NO sense to me at all.

Do you think that you could do work from home? There is a site called Rat Race Rebellion that has a lot of listing for working at home. It is full of legitimate companies that pay you either as an independent contractor (they don't take taxes you claim all your money at the end of the year) or as an employee (they do take taxes). Some have strict set house other are more easy with the hours.
I have been working at home on and off since 2005 and there are a lot of opportunities out there for those willing to apply themselves to it. You might not make as much as you would working outside the house but when you see that you don't need gas, extra food, extra clothes and everything else that goes with a brick and mortar job it evens out really fast.

Yes, I could work from home. I'm always seeking opportunities to do things from home (especially legit ones LOL). I also have been doing focus groups at our local research centers. They pay GOOD and in cash! They even cover your parking expenses.
Could you message me the website or information for the place you are talking about?

We absolutely do not go to town unless we can't get out of it and even then if we have a drs. appt. coming up we try to put it off until all can be done at the same time. My husband works about an hours drive from where we live so that pretty much eats up gas money, movie money, fishing money and anything else that is not just necessary.

cjgrooms--- That's a good idea. I never thought about using Rachel's recipes. I have seen her show before and you are right, she is very frugal when it comes to foods and stuff. We waste alot of food here because we don't eat our left overs too often. I'm going to start checking her ideas out to see if I can make other things with her leftovers. Thanks!

It is Bad with gas prices the way they are but we own our place so that part is good. I didn't think to say that in the grocery line that when we have leftovers. I get out my Rachel Ray cookbooks and make a whole new meal out of it. I also use her recipes and tips to buy cheaper cuts of meat(and be able to eat them) and how not to be wasteful in the kitchen (i swear this women can use the last teaspoon of something to make something else).

tis will be the best way for an employee and employer to save money

It makes me so glad when I read in he news, that there are several projects currently running in the solar and wind industry and that they're booming so much and they're creating so many new jobs, it's pretty awesome.
I'm personally also hoping that algae fuel will replace oil, because it'll be alot cheaper.

I looked into this but the initial payout is so expensive that there was noway we could do it. The wind power started at around 17,000.00 and even with a tax break it was just to much for us right now. And it was the same with the solar power (which is the one i really wanted).

I agree with you both. I'd love to have wind power especially to produce electricity and that's a pretty fresh on my mind wish as we were without power after a thunderstorm 50 miles from us last night, but the initial cost is just more than my son and daughter-in-law and I together can come up with. We live on the same property and share expenses.

Hi thebeaddoodler, thanks for coming with this topic. It's a hot and spicy matter to all of us I guess. hehe. this oil price really burnt our pocket badly. Well, on the gas usage, we could make some plan on our trip. I also make sure my tank won't be that empty to be less than half. When it less than half that's mean more empty area in tank and the depression will be higher. So when we use the car in this way, the oil will be run faster.
For the grocery prices, I'm taking the different way by gardening. We couldn't plant the wheat in our garden of course.LOLOL. but we plant some potatoes, onion, carrot, cabbage, and some other herbs. there was one time before, all these plants were ready to be harvest, it was too load. We couldn't finish it by our own and we gave to our neighbor and to my friend's house. These plant really cut the expenses for the basic groceries. Try for it

I've tried gardening, but out here the expense to amend my soil enough that anything would grow would be a one time expense that's beyond my budget, and to plant without amending is to waste money on seeds and plants.

My family has started a garden to help with the food costs, and I'm trying to work to help us out now. I'm the oldest teen of the house, and sometimes my money's the only reason we have milk or my parents have gas to go to work.
I'm raising bonsai's this year to sell. I dug up some of the maple sproutlings that grew from the seeds that fell in our garden and I'm waiting for my roses to get big enough to take cuttings and turn them into bonsais now, since the roses will grow much quicker than the Maples will.
I'm also considering maybe taking some cuttings from my mimosa flamoyant (which I bought last year for five bucks at a flea market) and bonsai-ing them as well.
Since bonsai's sell for hundreds of dollars, it seemed like something I could do to earn more money, especially since I need to save up for a mode of transportation (not a car, Goddess knows that dream was dashed. I'd never be able to afford to drive the car, even if I somehow got the money to buy one. I'm planning on buying a scooter. The one I've my eye on gets 75 MPG, which means I could afford to drive it)., in order to be able to go job hunting. I may ask some of the local farms if they could use a cheap farm hand, since I'll take whatever I can get...and being a farm girl at heart anyway it'd suit me fine.
My family has cut back on groceries. We've never been people to buy more than we needed 'cause we've never been very well off, but we'd usually try to get one non-necessity for each of us, a treat, since life's often stressful enough to warrant a treat on occasion, we figure. But now that's cut out, we shop for enough food for fourteen days, if we don't have enough money for that then we go to the food banks. Though I'm not sure how much longer that might last, because I hear that food, clothing banks...charities, the salvation army, etc, are having a hard time now. There's more people than they can often affort to feed.
But I'm sure that if I can hurry and earn more money, and maybe if Mom gets a second job, then we'll do fine.
Currently, we're working out a trade for our farm property (which we're currently not living on 'cause of the housefires, we're renting a house in the suburbs right now) for a country esque house which would mean we wouldn't have to worry about rent anymore if this goes through. Which would free us up alot.
I know this doesn't sound very reassuring ^_^' but strangely I've more hope for my family and myself these days than I ever have. We've lived through tough circumstances when the economy was okay, but maybe now we'll finally get some solid footing, and be able to face this together.
I'm hoping, that we'll be able to do fine enough to be able to try to help others out too, since practically everyone's struggling these days.

wow, good for you! if you can take the bus instead of driving, that helps as well. do you visit the library as well?
we do a lot of stuff like that as a family (hubby and i have 2 daughters) and we go outside just to play catch or soccer as well. it doesnt always cost money to have fun!

As for riding the bus, I live in a rural area, so bus is out. I agree that having fun doesn't have to cost money. I have one daughter in Eugene Oregon. She's been there 4 years and wouldn't think of moving back to Texas. Some times she says she and her husband just walk to the big rose field they have there, or walk around town looking at historical sites, and a trip to the farmers market on foot is at least a half day outing. They have fun seeing all the new produce etc. plus doing their shopping. Unfortunately large cities aren't quite so pedestrian friendly, but there are still a lot of free things to do. Getting out and just playing with your kids in the yard is probably better for the whole family than going somewhere that costs money.

You can buy groceries on line? I have one store that has a website, and it delivers, but they only have the specials on the website.

Thankfully, I only live a mile away from my job. My husband does not work.
We have cut out some church activities. choir rehearsal is two days a week, 8 days in a month, we only go 4 days now.
I go to Costco's to buy food. I can get it in bulk and it last longer. I was in a convenience store near me one day, and picked up a small canister of coffee, they wanted 5.99 for it. I can get a 3 lb canister for 7.00. I do not drink coffee, my husband does, so it last a long time.
