AS inpulsive said grits are made from hominy. Now hominy is dried corn with the hull and the germ removed. This used to be done with wood ash or lye which is caustic. The hominy is then ground to a sandy texture. It is then simmered in water or milk until nice and thick. I like to put cheese in mine along with just a bit of sugar. i don't like to put milk on them. It is like a cereal.

Grits are ground up hominy, it is like corn. I don't know how to make grits from scratch, but I found an article on ehow how to make grits and it says to buy a box at the store, but you can't do that, huh? I guess you would dry out hominy and grind it up pretty much.
