Do you like conventional, traditional, meaningful names or do you prefer to go for unusual or unconventional names for your kids or for the kids of your near and dear ones? If you choose to go for uncommon, unheard of or unusual names for the kids, I would like to know your thinking behind going for such names, why do you prefer uncommon names? I came across quite a new name of a woman, her name was - ‘Symphony’ and she is in Indian (Symphony may be prevalent in other countries or you might have heard about it, but to me it was something extra-ordinary). Please share your thoughts with me. Thanks in advance.

I feel, a lot depend on the name and it's certainly not 'what's in a name?". I believe a name carries your personality to a great extent. My cousin sister's nick name is TOFFEE and good name is MISHTI (which means sweets). Now, she is doing MS in US, I mean she has grown up and when her friends and family call her Toffee and Mishti, I am sure she feels embarrassed. I would have atleast.
I feel, children should be given simple yet meaningful names. They should be at ease with it. They should find it easy to pronounce and spell. I like simple names like DIYA, ROOHI, MUSKAN....
We have beautiful treasure of names in mythology. Like Amrapali, Rahul, Sanghamitra, Sanjukta....

Some very nice, meaningful and uncommon names there. And yes how can one's name be 'doing things' or 'describing other objects'!! We should think before naming someone for that one thing we cannot change.
Very nice discussion.

The same views have been expressed by one more member here that sometimes it so happen that a name may be unsual sounding, but others (kids, as well) make fun of the person, with an unusal sounding name, like 'Toffee'. I also prefer simple, common but meaningful name. I do not like toungue twisters. I have seen many couples, they give unusal names to their kids, but when you ask them about the meaning of the name, they look quite blank. I believe, if a name does not have a well defined meaning, then it should not be considered as good one. Also, every word in Hindi cannot be rather should not be used as a name, in two cases I found the names peculiar -in one case it was - Vishesh (which is an adjective in Hindi) and other one is Kashish (Kashish is a kind of feeling). How these names were selected by their respective parents, I failed to understand. Some of my cousins kids have sweet names like 'Sumridh' (meaning a wealthy person) and another one is 'Daksh' (meaning - Perfect) and one more 'Pratik' (meaning - a symbol).

I like to go for unique names or uncommon names. The reason behind this is I like different names as I think they sound pretty, lol. No real reason, just want to be different. My daughers names are: Sasha, Jaleila and Shanae. I have never heard of anyone called Jaleila before I was looking though a name book and I saw the name Jileila, so I changed it a bit and made it Jaleila, but most of the time now her name gets shortened to Jilly anyway, lol. Also with different names I think you will always remember them more, as their name is unusual. People often have to ask me twice what is the name of my daughter Jaleila as they have not heard it before.

Hi deepak,
When it comes to names, I just love Indian names because I understand their meanings. I like names which are connected to nature. I always liked the name Sagar and always thought that my life partner will be some Sagar from somewhere...but as you know all these are just our immature childish thoughts which changes with time. names like sagar, vishal, sameer, nir, niraj etc for boys and names like suman, nisha, khusboo, etc etc.....which express natural beauty is very much pleasing to my ears........but this does not mean that I don't like other names. Names of all our dear one's and friends are always on our lips and always liked by us. wase bhi naam meh kya rakha hai.........lol

So you go for meaningul and conventional names. I also like meaningful names even if they are uncommon. Sagar, suman, nisha etc. all are very meaningful names, but I find people go for new names such as 'Sagarika', Nandini, Siya, Vanishka etc. now a days.
Many thanks for sharing.

well i like weird names just because i am a superstitious (i guess that is what you would call it) on names.. i have found that people with certain names turn out to be a certain way.. there for i wouldnt wanna name my kids certain names that usually turn out to be associated with jerks etc.. that may be judgmental but it hasnt proven me wrong yet

Hello deepak! I would want to give my children unique and nice names which I would be sure that she/he won't regret or hate when he grows up. My husband and I talked about it the other day and he said that he is thinking one name for our child. I don't agree with it actually, but I haven't disagree yet, besides it's still 5 years from now so I know I could convince him yet

SYmphony is a beautiful name, but I don't know how it would work with the other kids - kids sometimes are cruel.
As for my preferences ... well a mix of both I think. I certainly prefer a name that is not too common. MY name was so common when I was a kid that if you called one kid 6 or 7 would look LOL
I like names that have a nice meaning. I like names that other kids can't use their imagination to stretch into something that will help them make fun of it. I like names that are short. ANd I like to practice the sound of the full name together before making final choice.

I think that I like the idea of traditional names better. Not really the over used ones like John, Mary, Paul, and all of those, but ones that are old enough to have a profound, even Biblical meaning. "Symphony," is definitely different. I do not think that I would want to name my child that. I knew a child once named, "Future" and one name "Miracle." I like the name "Miracle," to me, it says it all.

Hi,
A name should have a meaning. I feel that it is important to have a name which everybody can remember or at least pronounce properly. Some names are very difficult to even call. we are known by our name first before meeting anyone. But, again it is not in our hands. Our parents choose the name for us and only thing we can do is choose a name for our kids. As parents can choose the name for our kids.
Last but not the least, I feel what's in a name..........

Hi I tend to go with traditional names but my eldest daugher has an unusual one but she loves it and it is a pretty name and not one where she would be teased. I feel that is also an important factor when choosing a name and also looking at the intials as some initials could spell a word which would end up being a nickname for them. Ellie :D

hello dpk262006,
my name is very unconventional and i like it that way as i know there is nobody in this world who have the same name as mine (except if they saw my name in the past and decide that they want to name their kids the same way)
dont ask what my name is coz i am not gonna say it anyway.
i dont like my name in the beginning as it reminds me of my estrange dad's past and present and it just makes me sad all the time. but after i reach college i realized that my name is one of a kind and that i should be proud of it and not be ashamed of the reason behind it.
if i will have my kid in the future i would like to have a name that is different and will be a name that will just be ONE in a lifetime.
btw, i have a friend who gave me an indian name (chaandnee or chandnee?) he said i am his moonlight, sweet but oh well, i was so in love with him back then but now no more as i am very happy and very much in love with my husband.
takecare

When i was thinking of a name for my baby although I wasnt sure of the gender yet I have always wanted a name that will leave an impact to people something that is memorable femenine or very masculine, I wanted a name with a sense of character in it. I also go for the names of the royalties kings, queens, princes and princessesor great explorers or conquerors those names that sound strong just maybe because if i do so named my child with such name the strongness in their characters and the appeal or charisma of those people will rub on my child.

I think that easy to spell names are the best... I was named Mary Margaret and that was quite a mouthful for a kid. I went by Margie but even that with an eight letter last name was a bit much to learn to write.
I think that it is cruel for parents to have outlandish spellings of names or names that are hard to pronounce as that insures that their children will be the recipients of mispronounciations and misspellings of their names.
I remember one writer who was named P.G. Wodehouse. I always wondered why he went by "P.G." and then found that his name was Pelham Grenville Wodehouse. Can you imagine that? Poor fellow.
It tends to be easier for children to have conventional names... and these can still be meaningful.

I have a Victor Clyde ( named after a guy that saved my brother from being hit by a car when we were younger and my step dad), a Crystal Ilene (name after a book I loved as a kid and my middle name)a Ismeal Roberto (both are family names) and a Summer Jasmine ( named by her big sister. i Want them to have names that will make a statement but not get then beat up. I have a friend that was going to name her baby Thor but thankfully it was a girl and she named her Gwendoline. I begged her to forget Thor that would have been h@ll on the poor kid in middle school.

I have three girls. My oldest is named Nicole Lynn- Nicole was the name of my childhood best friend's middle name. Lynn was after my dad's middle name. My middle is named Ashley Taylor-I wanted her first name to be Taylor, but her dad didn't like it. My youngest name Is Desiree Danielle-Desiree was named after another friend's horse.
All of these names are common, but meaningful to me.
