I would have to recommend AVG anti virus. You can get a free version from their website at grisoft.com and it is updated daily so that your virus protection is always up to date. The free version is not very customizable, but you can set the time of day you want the daily scan to run.
I downloaded AVG because the license on my paid software ran out. The very first scan that AVG did found 5 viruses that my paid version didn't catch.
Combine this with a good spyware program like Spybot or Spy Terminator and you will have solved a lot of your computing troubles.

I have been using www.grisoft.com and it has been good to me. Maybe you can try it too. All the best.

The best free one that i have ever used is AVG free antivirus. i found that to be good, but you have to update it often and run scans regular, but if its free what can u expect. i didnt get any virus's from downloading it.
The only reason i dont use it now is because ive got an antivirus through my internet provider now. Otherwise i would stil use it. (doesnt work on windows vista tho)
Hope this helps :)

I know what you mean but I think you need to bite the bullet and pay for a subscription service. Kaspersky is a good one, you pay about $20 per year, download it and forget it, it works in the background and keeps itself up to date automatically.
Or get a Mac, apparently. No viruses there.
