Do you worry about your posture

Is posture something you worry about or do you not care. I often catch myself slouching when I'm in front of the computer and my back and neck have been hurting more often. So I'm pretty conscious lately to try to maintain a proper stance of chest out, shoulders back, stomach in. I see older people who have permanent slouches and/or a hump on their back and I get worried that if I don't improve my posture, that could happen to me. What do you think about your posture? Is it important to you?

Posture is a main concern for the people who work for long hours in front of the computer. It is called as repetitive stress injury. I am very much concerned with it because I am expereincing the same proplem of low back and neck pain. For that I have got a new push back chair which has typical curvature at the back to support you. The best posture to maintain is to sit straight as you had said and rest your hands on the key board. Even this posture should not be continously kept for more than 30 min. Every 30 min try to get up and walk for a while, and then come back and do your work. The pressure on the back will be decreased. Doing stretching exercises and jogging will help you to strengthen your back muscles as well.

That is very logical and sound advice. Thanks! I should probably invest in an ergonomically correct chair for home, because I am on the computer so much at home.

Yes you need to buy one very soon. Can you tell me how much it would cost your in Canada. I paid Rs 3000 for an ergonomic chair.

Yes indeed.
I have a bad back.
For me it is very necessary to have the right posture.
If I get lazy and when I am tired, I pay the price with
pain all over my back and legs.
I had my first Hernia operation when I was 31 years old.
For ten years, I was working good and it was going great.
Know I am back to zero.
Cannot do my normal job and need to exercise every day.
What I find very hard to do.
On top of that I have gotten a depression, that makes me very
lazy. Where as I find I am gaining to much weight because I sleep to much.
Weight gaining is not good for your posture.
On the other had , I have meet a real good doctor and she has given me hope.
She believes if I train often enough, my muscles will get stronger and I will be able to live again.
Next month the real training at the sport club begins!
So yes posture is fatal in my case.
Take care, Margajoe

I'm supposed to do exercises everyday too, but I'm so undisciplined! I threw out my back years ago and had many visits to the physiotherapy about it. For a few years, I was pretty good about doing the exercises, but once you stop, it's so hard to get back into the groove. Here's to us trying to discipline ourselves. I hope your exercise program works for you and makes you healthy again. It is such a feeling of accomplishment when you achieve your goals! Good luck, Margajoe.

I worry about it a lot. I often forget to sit up straight and end up looking like a question mark in front of the computer. I don't know why I still do it. It aggravates and old rib injury and makes my stomach cramp up a little.

I find my hips hurt if I don't sit properly. You should try tightening your stomach muscles as you sit. It's supposed to improve your core muscles. Hopefully that helps!

Hi! As I have scoliosis, I need to watch my posture more than I do, for sure! Doing yoga regularly is a great way to become more aware of your posture.

Ooh, scoliosis sounds painful! I agree that yoga is wonderful for your posture. It really makes you focus on your body. I especially loved doing bikram's yoga in the hot, humid room. My body felt wonderful after the regimen of holding poses and stretches.

Oh, yeah! Sitting for long hours in front of the computer makes me slouch more often these days. Posture is important to me so it worries me at times when I experience neck and back aches.

I notice I slouch the most in front of computers too and recently have been experiencing more neck problems than usual. I keep adjusting the seat/monitor to see if it helps, but so far nothing has. The computer is dangerous this way!!

I think for people like us, who spend long hours sitting in front of the computer, it is a must to have a regular exercise routine daily. Regular work out might lessen chances of getting the aches and pains we normally complain about.

Posture is definitely important to me. I slouch naturally so I have to make an effort to sit up. I have a job where I spend most of my day at a desk so I'm afraid that if I don't continue to make an effort I could end up with a permanent slouch. I wouldn't mind wearing a good posture brace if it wasn't so hot this time of year.

Does your work have an ergonomic program where someone gives you an ergonomic assessment to ensure your office/workstation is properly suited for your body? I think something like this is especially important nowadays. Almost all offices work with computers and require long hours of sitting and typing.

I wonder why it is that it's so hard to make the effort for something so important. Like, what are our priorities anyway, right? Thanks for the thought.

My son has rounded shoulders through slouching so much, I have already told him that if he does not stand up straight he will have a hump.
It is quite hard to remember to stand up straight though, I am guilty of doing it. Mind you I actually find that sitting in front of the computer I actually do sit up real straight. But this is because I did typing when I was younger and so was taught all the correct posture at college. It is just automatic, but when I am standing I just slouch and that too is just automatic!

My father is the one that ingrained in me that I could develop the hump. Such a scary thought when you're growing up, hey?

doubloonie_ I've been thinking about this for days. I noticed my body is changing, but my tummy, not my back. I'm slender, but I did have three kids.
I also noticed I breathe from my stomach. These last few days I've been working on breathing from my lungs, which lifts my body. It also helps to maintain good posture.
I know when I get really intense on mylot, I forget all about posture and breathing. I'm increasing my awareness and your discussion reminded me. I think I'll put a little sign near my laptop. "Are you a slouch today?"

What a great idea about putting up a note. You'll be sure to think about your posture everytime you sit in front of the computer then. Thanks for the idea!

I have really bad posture. Whether I'm standing or sitting, I tend to slouch. I don't really know why I do this. It hurts to stand straight and sit straight. i think there's something wrong with my back or spine. One time, when I had dinner with my friend's family and their acquaintance, the acquaintance noticed my bad posture and corrected me. I was really embarrassed because she, a total stranger, had noticed it. I try to sit up straight but often times I forget. :(

Yikes! If it hurts you to stand/sit up straight, I don't think that can be a good sign and you should definitely get it checked out by a doctor. There's no shame in doing so and it can only be to your benefit. I hope your back gets better soon!

Thanks for the response nupats. It's true. It is tough to keep your posture upright. You always have to keep reminding yourself. It's a lot of mental work.

Parents are only trying to help improve the quality of our lives. I remember my parents always telling me not to slouch. And now I catch myself telling myself - if that makes sense. They have ingrained the warning in my head.

I do. I have been advised several times to check my posture. I slouch when I use the computer too. Lately I was diagnosed of functional scoliosis. The doctor said that it was because of my lifestyle and my posture. I work in an office and I usually work in front of the computer so that is a lot of slouching. I often have pains on my lower back. The doscotr advised me therapy for 3 weeks, 3 times a week to make things right. Ughhhhh!

Yikes! Sorry to hear about your bad back, christine. I have a bad back too and I can empathize with the pain. Of course, all this slouching isn't helping. Good luck with your therapy!

i think that posture is very important. i mean, you only get one body and you should take care of it while you can so you don't regret it later. i've found that when i'm really tired, i tend to slouch a little. but for the most part, i think that i have really good posture. my dad is retired air force and some things just weren't allowed when i was younger.

I agree that posture is very important and that you only do have one body. I do try to take care of my back and neck because it hurts a lot, but for some reason, it's just very hard to remember! It's good that you always had someone reminding you. My dad would remind me when I was younger too, but now that there's no one to remind me, I often forget.

I am consious about my posture but while sitting in front of the computer for hours especially while I am at home, I forgot about this and after some time when my shoulders or back begin to ache I will remember about this and then correct my posture and try to sit straight. I think we should be more careful about our posture other wise it will create hump or slouches later.

It's the hump that I get really worried about. I know it's sometimes hereditary, but I believe for the most part your posture causes it. Yikes!

I don't have a good posture, maybe some problem with my ribcage. It is different when I compared it with my brother. I had been trying to straighten my posture since high school. I think I look lousy when I my posture isn't straight. But then, I think don't have a lot of discipline because after some time of keeping it straight, it would still come back to its slouchy state without me noticing it.
Once in a while I still try to get it straight. But not all the time.

I think discipline is the key word. I don't have a lot of discipline either when it comes to posture. Let's all try to work together and improve our discipline!

It is important to me but I don't fret on it. If I experience any pain on any part of my body like lower back or shoulders, I immediately make a conscious effort to straighten up my body. Or if I happen to pass the mirror and see shoulders drooping, I try to correct it.

Yeah, It's good to listen to your body - when it's in pain, it's telling you something's not right. Even though the pain reminds me correct my posture, I still need to try harder not to let it get that far that it needs to be in pain before I correct it.
