Do you like your name to be shortened or to be called by your whole name?

When I was growing up, my mother never wanted me to be called by the nickname of my name which is Terry, short for Teresa. So now that I am an adult [and quite old!], I prefer my whole name and not to be called Terry. Because that isn't my name and it doesn't sound right to me. Do you like to be called by a short version of your name? Or by your whole name?

Hi, Most of us have nicknames, for me, I'm OK if my Mum call me, but I can't accept it when the others call me using the nickname.

I come from a long line of family members that love to call you by your first and middle name. I hate that. LOL However, my first name is Connie that is what I prefer to be called.

My name is Tina so it isn't easy for anyone to shorten it much. For a while several family members called me T but I asked them to stop and they did. For a long time I didn't like my name but now I do and I prefer they use it. Now if I could just get used to not feeling like I've done something wrong when ppl call me Tina Marie...my Mom always calls me that when I'm in trouble. My name is Michelle, however because i used to work with a girl in a small office witht he same name they asked me if they minded calling me Shelley and I really liked it, so all my friends know me as that and I have one best friend that has always called me Mich but she is the only person to get away with it. Family always call me by my name and thats the way I like it but to be honest aslong as someone is not abusing me I dont mind what I get called.

I have to names in my real name but most of my friends call me just one name (from my real first name) because I forced them not to call me my other name. I don't like the first word/name (from my real first name). Anyway, at home, my brothers call me 'yhat', it's a short name of being thin in our own dialect. I was thin before, when I was young. I like being called as that. I feel like I'm so loved and still their baby. :) I'm the youngest in the family by the way.

Shortened and then pronounced differently, because then it takes on a different meaning than my original one did. And it makes me sound more original and less like a fuddy duddy -- in my opinion, lol.

My name is already short, and I like to have it pronounced correctly. Tho I was associated as a pair for quite a while and certain people could call me by the other name and I'd accept it. After all, they had the right pair.

Hello,..... At the time of your birth a name was given by your parents out of love and affection.so also at home they might be calling you by nick names out of fancy.that nick name should be confined to home and for other purposes the full name,i mean the original name, should be used.my self, yes, i am called by original name and no short cut. thanx.

I am Danielle (spelled "Danelle" because of an odd mother). My family always called me "Dani" pronounced "Dan-e". My teachers at school called me Danielle pronounced Dan-yell and spelled it wrong (with an i though it doesn't have one) or pronounced it wrong "Da-nell" and spelled it write. My friends said it right and spelled it right though if they spent a lot of time with my family they usually started calling me Dani. The only thing that ever bothered me was "Dan". My dad called me "Dan" a lot and I always thought, gee wizz you had two sons! Why call your daughter Dan!? Some people still call me Dan. But most people call me Danielle now (and most people spell it that way too though it isn't actually spelled that way). Now that was confusing. Call me Dan-e or Dan-yell or even Da-nell, just don't call me Dan!

It depends on who is doing the calling. My name is Marisa and most of my family and close friends call me by nicknames, like Ris. I don't like when people I do not really know or consider myself close with call me by the nicknames, since I feel that is only something those close to me can do. I don't know if that is weird but that is the way I feel.

I want my name to be shortened.. I have two names actually and my parents do call me with those two names when they are angry at me... so everytime someone calls my name completely... it sounds like my mom or dad scolding me. LOL

When I was younger, I resented my name. It's Larisa, which is of Russian origin, and I was teased so often for it that I grew to hate and resent it. Even teachers teased me to some degree for it, but the kids who had parents that weren't entirely okay with Russia were the worst. Nevermind the fact that no one can ever spell it correctly. They always add a second 's', if they get it right at all, until I correct them, which has always kind of annoyed me. My father always shortens my name to "Lara". That one is generally easier to spell, and never resulted in as much trouble. But, he's the only one who's ever refered to me as "Lara", so it just seems uncomfortable or awkward in some way whenever anyone else calls me by that shortened version. Now that I'm older, I have learned to appreciate the beauty in my birth name, Larisa. I like it. It's not too common in the United States, but it's not so uncommon that it's just plain weird to think of someone walking around with that name on their birth certificate. Plus, I can take care of myself now, and there are far fewer people who have an irrational fear or hatred of Russia or it's people, so that's no longer an issue that I have to be wary of. Though I still get annoyed sometimes when people misspell my name (particularly in online venues where my name is actually my ID, and so is spelled correctly, in plain site, where all can see), I like my name and really do prefer to be called by it. I still feel awkward when people try to use Lara though, if they aren't my father.
