Anime: Subtitled or dubbed?

I agree, I prefer watching them in japanese with subtitles. The dubbed don't have the same feeling as the japanese with subbs. The emotion is displayed better in the japanese with subs.

Personally, I preferred subbed than dubbed as it is more natural in terms of understanding of the story. Dubbed anime, depending on which language dubbed sometimes changed the vocabulary of certain words in the anime into something that is not relevant at all. Cheers.

I prefer dubbed becase I always feel I missed something in subbed. I dont know about the feeling it doesnt feel right watching it dubbed it all depends on what you watched first if you ask me. English dub actors usually are more skilled actors than the original Japanese ones becuse in USA if your not good now way you'll get a second chance. Most English dub actors get all the emotions right some even better than the original. I have caught the original voice actors blundering in a few animes wihic you dont see in the English dub version at all. I also noticed the original voicers when the character he/she is voicing is suppose to be very exicited or emotional they seem to blunder very badly in that. Especially when the emotion is suppose to be very excited they do it with a straight emotion. COme to think of it they do most voicing in straight emotion. In English dubs you dont hear the emotional differences in the voicing. From what I seen Naruto voicers matched up with the charaters emotions in both the original and dubbed.

I have to agree with you. Watching anime in its original japanese version is a lot better than watching the dubbed version. But it still depends - i mean sometimes the subtitle is very hard to understand although it's been translated - the grammar sometimes just doesn't fit or whatever. But it's still better than dubbed cause all the sound effects would be original and you'll get to feel and imagine it better.

Definitely subtitled. Some dubs sound really horrible -- I always cringe when I hear an American accent rendering voice acting in an anime. If you don't understand Japanese, some meaning will always be lost in translation...people who dub work off of a translation script as well, after all. And I know a lot of people find this annoying, but I like subs for the parts when I have to pause to see read the explanation for some harder-to-understand-literally part. ^^

I prefer subbed anime for a few reasons. Mainly it's because some dubs are terribly acted. With subs, the voice acting is often better. Also, if the anime might be considered a kids' anime, then the dubbed version will be strongly edited. Like with Sailor Moon, Sailor Uranus & Neptune (their names escape me at the moment) are originally lovers, but in the dub, they are referred to as cousins. Or in Cardcaptor Sakura, they edited the dubbed version of the show to focus on Li more than the sub did because they wanted to appeal to both girls & boys. They also edited out some romance between several of the characters. There are only a few anime I watch the dubbed version of like Fullmetal Alchemist & Rurouni Kenshin & Dragonball series. That's because I don't like hearing the main males in those series being voiced by a female. I find it kind of creepy

For me it depends on the anime. English voice actors don't always fit the characters...or are very good in the anime. Sometimes they're flawless in both Japanese and English -- sometimes they're better in Japanese even though I need subtitles then. It depends, lol.

I feel the exact same way. I think something is lost in the translation when it's dubbed in english. For example I can't watch Naruto on cartoon network because the acting and the words are not the same. I love it in Japanese. They seem so much more emotional.

Hi,Dr_Gonzo! I share the same viewpoint with you.I really hate the dubbed version.The animation with its origingal language is a part of the work so people should not separate the original voice from the whole story.

I really prefer the subbed ones simply because at least I see the original work not like when it's dubbed some parts maybe lost. Also usually when another company distributes it in a certain country, the anime becomes bound to their culture so it loses its original Japanese feel.

I believe that watching subbed is always a safe choice. Everything does seem more natural and emotional. Dubbed anime sometimes captures the same feeling but often the character's voices don't seem quite right. I don't think a big part of it is which one you watched first, but I've seen bleach up to 30 somthing dubbed then I switched to continue. After I went back to see dubbed just for fun I realized that it just wasn't right. So watching it first doesn't always make a difference. Subbed all the way baby!!!

For me subtitiles are the way to go . i've watching anime myself for a while and what i see some of them are pretty good.Like naruto, gundam seed,and few orthers.

Either of the two bec. In english sub it has more emotion when the character deliver their line, In dub basically you can understand.

I like watching the subtitles because in the dubs they delete some of the scene in them or that not saying that exact saying in the subs. It is some much difference.

Just like everyonehere, I'd say that watching dubbed animes is less interesting than the subbed ones. The original seiyuus (voice actors) are usually better in bringing the characters, and besides, watching subbed animes can develop our skill in learning Japanese.

i share the same sentiments as you. I have associated the anime style with the japanese language and it just doesnt seem right with english dubs.

Definately subtitles. For a start, most of the English dubbing is done by American companies, which, no offense to Americans, seem to handpick the most strong and annoying American accents to give the characters. Also, they often edit teen/adult amine for small children, which often involves removing scenes, chopping up entire storeys etc. And yes, subtitles does make it feel more authentic.

That's true, I actually learned some Japanese words from watching the subbed anime series. But sometimes I buy series with bad subtitles. Either the subtitles are in a different language or the grammar is really bad. So I really prefer the dubbed anime movies if it's available. That way, I don't even have to look at the screen anymore!

Without a doubt it would have to be subbed. The Japanese language is awesome. There are several advantages to having it subbed instead of dubbed. First is that the anime experience seems authentic. With the Japanese culture and everything else portrayed in the anime, it makes sense that the voicing should be Japanese as well, otherwise there is something vital missed out. Secondly, most dubs are done horrendously, with the voicing failing to match the character personality, as it does with the Japanese voicing. There are only a few anime's which I have seen dubbed well, including Cowboy bebop. Also the Japanese are able to put emotion into the voicing, while the dubs are unfortunately usually done by quite bad actors. Often the names are not pronounced properly, or changed entirely because they can't be pronounced. This all takes away from experience of watching a foreign animation. Its better in its original form. And you get to learn a hell of lot of Japanese while watching anime subbed. So you have the benefit of learning a brilliant language!

I prefer to watch anime in japanese with subtitles and i can learn japanese language by looking at the subtitles..haha
