I saw a commercial for Accent seasoning about 30 years ago and it said it enhances the flavor of meats, sauces so I've been using it ever since and I never even knew it was MSG. Who knew. That is the one thing that it never occurred to me to look on the ingredients as I've looked on the back of just about every single food can, carton and container you could possible imagine. I'll have to think about this before I add it to my next meat or sauce dish. Not only could we save money but we could be healthier as well. Thanks for pointing that out to me ShepherdSpy. Take care.

You're Welcome! We don't eat much takeout, but my Significant Other specifies "No MSG" when ordering..I didn't know myself that "Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein" was another name for it to get it past the ingredient readers!

I had a question about that. I thought that when you say no MSG when ordering Chinese food, the rice you get will be lacking in color, in other words not the brown rice that we like, but almost white. If you could you let me know about this, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi SueRod!
AFAIK,(From experience!) the brown colour in Fried rice is due to Soy Sauce being added during cooking, and I read that "Low Grade" Soy Sauce is made using HVP in the fermentation process..yep,it's an MSG product.....The Naturally fermented product is not made the same way,so possibly is free of MSG?
Take a look at the Wikipedia entry on Soy Sauce..

Hi Shepherd Spy,
It is simply amazing how many products contain MSG. I am in awe, since MSG starts my migraines. A definite trigger for me. Since I made this link, I seldom eat out. I take the time to prepare my own food to insure that I am not getting any MSG.
Do you have any idea how long it takes to get residual MSG out of your system?
Happy posting..

I knew that Accent was MSG. I do not intentionally put MSG into my food, but I do eat food that contains MSG all the time. I have seen big bags of MSG at the store for sale before, but I have never bought any and I have never used Accent. I do see some older recipes that call for it.
