disclaimer: offending anybody by my topic is not my intention i am just sharing my dog problem and would like to find out a way to help him out. i have written in the past that i am having some behavioral issues on my dog and lately he is showing strange aggression with people around. so i look online and check if it's possible for a dog to be a racist, i have found a few topics about it and this one struck me as it seem to be similar to mine. here is the link: http://slate.msn.com/id/2079214/ to tell more about my dog (for the sake of those who dont know) he's been in to a lot of trauma since he is a baby as we think he comes from a puppy mills back in china. we have fixed it and he grows up for 2 and a half behaving like a sweetheart till he got hurt by a chinese man while we are with our friend's house (the man stepped on his paws) after that day he is never the same again and hates/dislike all chinese man and whenever he hears someone talking in chinese he will freak out and just bark till i try to make him cool down by saying all is ok and there is no need to be afraid. it gets a little better but we have to move him US as we decided to settle there for good and he was more afraid and more protective of himself after that trip. now, every time i walked him out if he sees a chinese man and a black person he will bark like crazy and i dont understand it. i thought at first it was like a coincidence as it happens a few times but it keeps happening so that makes me worry and wonder if my dog is a racist in that way. he have never been hurt by anybody out here except that one time with a black dog that barks at him while we are walking but that is a black dog and not a person so i dont understand the relationship of it. do you have a dog like mine? any related stories? what did you do to stop it? any lesson that you want to share? i would love to read and learn from you. thanks a lot in advance and have a good one!

Hi jair, wow! I have no idea about this case but I just love the story...I hope someone here can give you more tips about the situation...I remember my parents has a dog before and when a guy tease him so much, he never forget it, every time he will meet the guy, he is very aggressive to attack him and maybe they will really register it in their mind but about dark dog and person,I also don't see the relationship. Maybe he was teased by a dark person and you didn't recognize it!

hello che, yes i am hoping to hear some thoughts and advice from members here that i know have pets at home. dogs seem to hold grudges for a long time and it is sad coz if something terrible happened they hold on to it till you find a ways to calm him down. when it comes to his attention to black dogs and person i have no idea where he got that except with a dog. i walk him all the and i would know if something happened and my hubby will tell me if it happens in the past but so far we dont have a clue. it's funny and strange at the same time whenever i talk to him in mandarin (few sentence that i know) he will cry or show a dislike to me so sometimes i tease him about it as i feel it may help him understand that i can speak the language and so there is no need for him to be upset. he's the only dog we ever have that behaves that way, my husband and i grows up having lots of pets with us and no one behaves the way our dog now does so it is hard to find out the answers. thanks for the response., have a good one!

Yes, there are racist dogs. Keep in mind that animals pick up on our body language, patterns of speech, and our emotions. This being said, it can be a learned behavoir. However, I have seen cases where dogs reacted to people wearing hats. Chances are someone wearing a hat antagonized the dog. I've seen where some react funny towards specific genders or to children. Sometimes animals, for example chihauhaus, tend to be drawn to a single person in a family and don't want anything to do with any other family member. There are also cases of jealousy, or with older dogs where they can't see so well anymore. Also, a dog with a medical condition can show aggression out of it's discomfort. What I am saying is sometimes it is a learned trait. Sometimes the animal has had a bad experience. Hugs

hello carolyn, thanks for sharing such information. i am not sure how he got such behavior, as far as learned traits i have to say that it will be impossible that he got that from either me or my hubby coz we have talked to a lot of people in different colors and we have been with them as well. i remember the only time he behaves great to a black person is when i walked him out and we saw this kind man walking his dog as well, my dog played with him but that is the only instance that he behaves well other than that he is nuts strange coz he behaves the same well even on tv. i dont know what colors dogs can see right now i am nannying a black toy poddle and he dont seem to have problems with her except of course when "colby" needs a lot of attention from me. i think you already know that our dog came from a puppy mill and he is having some trauma and behavior issues since he got hurt back in beijing. i really hope that he learned how to accept everybody and get over with all the problems he have, he used to be a very sweet and friendly to everybody and it hurts seeing that he is no longer the same. i am watching the "dog whisperer", i have tried some of his advice. my dog is afraid of any form of sewerage/drainage on the road and i thought i can give it a try and for 3 days he wont trust me going down stairs, i cried that i feel helpless that my intention is helping him and it ends up not the case. awhile ago i asked him to go with me to throw the garbage he is excited and walks like he used to but when we are about to reached the drainage i can feel that he is a bit hesitant to walk through so he uses the other way. i told my husband i am not the right one to train him as i am weak and tends to baby him and listen to what he wants and i know it is not helping him but the problems is.. if i try he ends up more afraid. anyway, thanks for sharing i know you have a lot of pets and have been to an organization that helps animals so your view and suggestion means a lot to me. have a good one!

hello vanities, sorry to hear about your allergies, some people overcome it by having a pet around them little by little, i know my hubby used to be allergic to cats but after getting one it helps him a lot so now he can have as many cat as he wants LOL yes, dogs and other kinds of pet is a huge responsibility specially if you have an aggressive dog. i know here it will cost a lot if your dog bites someone and your dog must be put down if that happens. i just cant bear that thought so i try to warn others that my dog is not a friendly one and not make our dog be with a place with so many people or dog a few is ok as it seems to help his behavior somehow but i dont want to take chances as the cost is dreadful. anyway, all kids loves dog (ok majority i guess) so i know what your kids are feeling too bad you cannot have one. thanks for being here, appreciate it. takecare

My pug is totally racist. It is awful and we have no idea where he got it. Our neighbors across the street are African American. We are on friendly terms with them, but every time our dog sees them in the front yard, he goes nuts! He starts barking and tries to run over there. He has never hurt anyone or anything, but it is really bizarre!

hello pie147, yes i dont understand it myself, they seem to pick one over the other. do your dog have other behavior problems too? our dog used to love anybody and plays a lot with other dogs but now he seems to be secluded and that just makes me sad as we cannot bring him anymore to dog park coz he dont to get along with them (dogs and other human). i hope your neighbor dont get mad on your dog, i have a friend who do the same thing to their neighbor so they complain about my friend and their dog. the committee asked them to either give away their dog or be put down, they dont want to do either so they just sell the home and move to a more friendly place. anyway, thanks for sharing your story at least i am not alone here in mylot. appreciate it a lot. good night!
