A very close friend of mine has a 16 year old son who is destructive. She has told me that he has phsically destroyed their house and that he curses constantly and he steals from them. I've never had kids soI really don't know what to tell her. Can someone help me?

I would suggest a positive reinforcement thing first, accept his age.At his age I think she needs to call the cops the next time he has a destructive outbreak. It is unfortunate that it has come to that.It seems to me that maybe it could have been dealt with a long ago differently. At this point it is my hope that the cops can scare him into better behavior. However the parents are going to have to put in a lot of work to no matter if they call the cops or not.I just think that it sounds like they have no choice at the moment but to call the cops when he loses it. I live in Rhode Island and here we have a program called C.P.S. it stands for child protective services. What they do is send a worker to your house to 1st find out what the situation. When they get all their information they will send a counselor to your home if they deem it necessary. What this counselor is supposed to do is provide any services deemed necessary to help the family stay together and provide any help they feel the family may need. They will even provide counseling in the home for the child, although they want to work with the parent as well. I know this can be scary for many parents because they feel they are bringing the department of children and their families into their home.Sometimes (as it sounds in this case) there isn't a choice. They are not there looking to take children from a non abusive home. They are there to help in any way they can.Maybe your friend can give something like this a try if it is offered where you are from. Sounds to me like what the boy needs is someone to knock him on his a*s a few times and show him how tough he really is. You would be surprised how much an attitude adjustment could do for him.

Hi HimynameisBones, He should be taken to a psychiatrist for counselling and medical treatment. The reason is that some disliking incident in their house pertaining to him or inbetween his parents would have taken part in his childhood days and if not there may be some other thing that might have disturbed his mind, which would have developed in to disliking his family. Many parents now-a-days fight in the precence of their children with out noting that the children will get disturbed. I am sure if the boy's parents take him to a psychiatrist- everythng will be all right and the boy will also be saved. Good Luck

Hi. I know the couple very well and I don't think I have ever seen them fight. I was just wondering, is it normal that he thinks he is being treated unfair? He has 2 younger sisters in their teen years who seem to be fine but he says that they are never punished or bothered about school. Also the good thing is that they are taking him to a psychiatrist. Thank you.
