I heard these two separate stories the other night...the kind that make you go AWWWWW big time. The first took place in Miami, Florida, where a stray female dog whose "baby" somehow fell and got stuck in a storm drain. A couple who was walking near the drain at the time noticed a female dog, pacing back and forth whimpering and in distress, and kept looking down the drain. The couple called 911, and moments later a fire rescue team came...and yes...successfully were able to get the puppy out. Since the two were stray dogs they were taken to the nearby animal shelter. Here's a link to the story which also has a video of the rescue. The two, mother and pup are still being held at the shelter, but news is that people are dying to adopt them as soon as their "shelter" quarantine is over. In fact, one of the firefighters who actually did the rescue wants to adopt the puppy himself. http://www.miamiherald.com/top_stories/story/567123.html The second story involves a mother mallard duck, also in distress as somehow her six baby chicks fell in a sewer system..Here's an excerpt from that story.. (quote) Trapped in a dark sewer, the six little mallard ducklings found themselves cut off and facing an uncertain future. Their only hope of seeing daylight again lay with their mother - who they had last seen more than a mile away as they were sucked into a drain. Rescue seemed impossible. Yet somehow the mother duck had managed to follow her offspring for more than a mile, apparently listening to their cheeps of distress at manhole covers as they were swept along below ground. Her incredible journey took her across a busy roundabout, countless roads, a metro rail line, a housing estate, two school playing fields and hospital grounds. The trail finally ended when she waddled on to Barrasford Close in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, where her chicks suddenly stopped. And it was there, standing over another man-hole cover, that the mother remained for the next four hours until local residents heard chirping coming from down below. They in turn launched a rescue operation, removing the manhole cover and using a child's fishing net to scoop all six from the sewer one by one and reuniting them with their mother in a paddling pool. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1026801/Amazing-rescue-mother-duck-went-extra-mile.html The article above even shows a map of the long, long journey these little chicks went through and of their patient "mom" who faithfully tracked them. And they say animals are dumb! Even in the animal world a mother will do everything to protect their young ones...sometimes, in my opinion...they do a better job than some human women...don't you think?

Aaaah yes what touching stroies both of them and lovely to hear that the dogs will get homed too. I am a very nuturing protective mother but yes the human animal can be a cruel one at times, there is a guy near me who is bringing up his child on his own as the mother didn't want to know, how very strange, I can't understand that one myself. Ellie :D

Maybe it's just as well that guy is raising his child...probably makes a better "mom" than the mother would have

That is really sweet stories!! I seen a similar cause of puppies that got stuck in a pipe on that Animal police show on the Animal Planet. I hate watching that show...people make me mad. But in that case the mom wasn't around.

Awwww that is really such a good story. I think animals are really intelligent we just don't know it but they do understand and has feelings. I would do anything for my kids myself. I think yes some women don't take good care of their kids. They give birth to them and just doesn't care at all..Very heartless..This animals overpowered them.

I know I think animals take care of their young better than some human mothers--you never hear animal mothers abusing their babies

These stories were wonderful, Pye. Thanks for sharing with us. Just goes to show that, in the animal kingdom, a mother's love is the strongest when her babies are in trouble. If alot of human mothers were like this, there would be no abandoned children.

The ones that throw their babies in the garbage are the ones who have major mental issues for how could any mother do this to their own flesh and blood that they carried for 9mo. and gave birth to.

Animals are so NOT dumb and it's about darn time people realize that. And yes I do agree that they can be better mothers than some of our human counterparts. Such a shame but very true but then again there are some terrible mothers in the animal kingdom too especially with the first time moms. Very sad but I guess nature works in strange ways. Have you read the book by Terri Irwin called "Steve and Me"? I'm nearing the end of it and I've really enjoyed the book a great deal!! It's awesome and I'm so happy Terri found the strength to write it. It has some funny parts in it about when they were trying to concieve their son (wanting a boy) lol I laughed so hard!! Then there's some really sad parts such as Steve's mom getting killed in a car accident and when his best mate was badly injured during a storm in the crocidile pen. A really good book!!

Animals are very smart. They know how to protect babies. Rules in nature are simple. They do everything for small ones, including loosing their own life. Amazing how they can use telephaty to listen to lost babies. Animals are smarter than we think. They think, feel and can solve some problems. They have better morals than many humans....

Family is responsible in most part. Society is second. We are no longer as solid nations or communities. We are all lonely people including people in relationships. We have personal computers to talk to the world and be more isolated than before. Some kids think that star wars are real... Bond as it used to be is lost and society is colder and mechanical. People are working many jobs to have more to spend, but less time to just sit down and listen to universe.... Morals are lost long time ago, but are worst in the last 80 years than ever.

Those two stories did make me go "awwww" and lifted my spirits. Always nice to hear some good news for a change. I have seen some animals which were not good mothers. We had a cat, once, that refused to care for her young. It certainly is a lot more rare in the animal world than in the human world. Thanks for sharing the pick-me-up stories.

Wow that was really a very touching story even for the animals. It is really heart warming. It only proves that even animals are animals... it also have the heart of a mother... Though it can only express its love in a way sometimes unfamiliar to us. I love animals... and I am glad that those poor babies were safe together with the mother. And its good that there are people who have a deep love for animals. Because nowadays, I have seen a lot of cruelty of man to animals esp to dogs.

indeed these are nice stories... true that at times animals are 'better mothers' than humans,... i guess it is because they dont face the 'many temptations', or 'earthly problems' that human moms do... human moms have to think of how to 'raise their children', how to have money to buy things for their children, think of their children's education and future... and on top of that human moms also have to deal with her own needs, wants and desires... and i guess when human moms put themselves above their children... they become less responsible of their children.. worse - they forget to be moms.. and... trouble begins...

Well in a way, even animal "moms" have their own concerns when you think of it...in some ways they have to teach their "kids" how to survive, and until they can fend for themselves the animal parents have to provide food for them as well, just like we humans. When you think of it though, it's only us humans that take so gosh darn long to become "independent"...something like at least a total of 18 years or whenever the "child' leaves the nest, while most animals are pretty self-sufficient in a few months
