Which is better? I am thinking of changing my OS and am half decided whether to go on to XP or not. Currently I am using 2000. For those who have used 2000 AND Xp before, how do you rate the two? Which is better? For someone who uses media applications more, which is a better choice? XP or 2000?

Hi kdhuleshia, thanks for the prompt response. When you say windows 2000 is best for speed, what kinda speed are you referring to?

I still have Win 2000 in one of my boot but I use mainly winXP. For task that are resource hungry like video conversion, slit/join and big image processing I do it in Win2000. This is because I have maintain W2K lean in installed programs than my WXP. If you want to try a new OS then it would be a good idea to have a backup plan just in case it didn't work out.

I was thinking of doing just that. Hmm... Now I am planning to see if I should install both XP and 2000 in the same machine. Then an earlier posting is also suggesting Linux. I wonder if I can do all three on the same box.

Linux automatically detects the existing OS, and asks you if you want to include it on the boot menu. Once installed, GRUB will come up each time you boot the machine. If you don't make a selection within ten seconds, it defaults to Linux.

Why not, I actually have three: W2k, XPsp2 & XPsp3, later on XPsp2 is for linux but I need one more for swapspace partition. I've read in one of the discussion here that when linux is installed it will detect other OS and leave it as it is, I just don't know how the boot menu would appear. Good luck to your quest.)

windows xp - windows xp logo
My son has windows 2000 on his computer and it's so slow it's not even funny, I have xp on my computer and I love it.. When i upgraded from Windows 98se I didn't think I'd like it but it's so much better... I was told I should upgrade to Vista but I won't my husband has that on his computer and it's so bad that I won't even go near his and I love computers and playing on them... tell ya something... So over all XP is the best of anything out there right now..

Thanks for the additional vote of confidence wisconsin26. I will be looking for a copy of the XP to install in my next upgrade. Now is to hunt for a good bargain for the Hard disk. Heh heh ... lots to prepare for this migration of OS.

Windows 2000 is still used by a lot of businesses and government agencies, being considered one of Microsoft's most stable operating systems of all time. It also works with media, but rather slowly. It seems like DVDs play at about 15 FPS. Windows XP was specifically designed to combine the stability and file system security of Windows 2000 with the media capabilities of Windows Me. What can you tell me about your computer? It really doesn't take much to run XP, but I recommend 512 MB of RAM or more.

MY system is plenty good for XP. When I did my upgrades of the hardware a few years ago, I did prepare it for the future OS upgrades in mind as well. So hardware wise, there is no problem. My main functions of the PC is starting to migrated from system to media. So I am seriously considering XP. Thanks for the affirmation santuccie.

I sticked in using Windows 2000 for a long time. Later due to my husband, I changed my mind and then I like using Windows XP. I am satisfied with it. I just haven't used Vista. I love China

Use XP. Windows 2000 seems like it was pushed out it has alot of errors. There is a way to make XP run decent on older machines. I have an old windows 98 tower 121mb ram and xp runs fine (not so good for games) but for the most part it runs good. If your machine is older i suggjest keeping the visual theam has classic (uses less ram) Trun off unessary applications running in the backround (this can be done via MSCONFIG Startrunmsconfig)

Well, looks like XP has more votes than 2000. Will be getting a new HDD soon to upgrade. Thanks for all the input. That command you gave looks mighty interesting richnovil. Will try it out once I get my XP up and running! Thanks again for the feedback.

Will take note of that when I do the installation. Looks like I have quite a bit to pick up on when it comes to XP. Thanks for the reminder and advise.
