What player should Real Madrid buy this season?

I wish Real Madrid would buy Ribery form Bayern Munich. Another great option could be Gerard form Liverpool. I don't know if Liverpool would ever sell him or if he himself would ever leave, but it would be a great addition to the club.
There has been a lot of talk about Cristiano Ronaldo, but I don't think that Manchester will sell him when he is bound with a contract till 2012. So, ignoring Ronaldo, what player do you think would be a great buy for Real Madrid and why?

They should buy Per Mertesacker and play him with Pepe in central defence as a long term replacement to fabio cannavaro.
