My family got orders to move to Italy and then they were cancelled last week. My husband came home from work for lunch today and said there is a possibility that we may end up in Hungary instead.
The base is not fully functional; it is in the midst of being built. There is no housing or shopping at all on base. We would have to fully function in the civilian economy.
I have never been outside of the United States and the prospect scares me a little bit.
I know nothing about Hungary at all. Does anyone here live there? Have you been there?

It has an absolutely fascinating history and the most wonderful architecture imaginable. But it's been torn by war and politics and is behind the times in a lot of ways. And the language! Oh my - a hard one to learn. No offence to Hungarians, but it would not be my first choice except of course for their wonderful borsht, goulash and paprika! LOL

Yeah, it scares me a little.
I really want to learn another language that I can maybe use later. I told my husband, "Well, if we don't want people to know what we are talking about we can always speak in Hungarian when we come back to the States! I am almost positive nobody will know what we are saying!" LOL
I don't really see Hungarian being truly useful once I leave though.
I am sure the photo opportunities are awesome there! But, the area is SUPER rural and no base ammenties. That frightens me seeing how it is my first time out of the country!
Spanish would be the easiest for me to learn because I have already taken it in High School and a semester in college. But I am nowhere near fluent! I really need to be immersed in to learn. My husband is already fluent though so he wants something else.

well if it's a Catholic area (and probably is) then the rural fetes and celebrations for almost every saints day in the Catholic calendar, will be wonderful to see and take part in. But truly - first time out of the U.S.? Not my idea of learning the fine art of travel and immersing in a new and strange culture. So let's just keep our fingers crossed it's not there ok?

My fingers are crossed!
Everyone keeps telling us that Germany is the best if we want to see Europe. I am not sure if we will get any choice as to where we go. They told him about Hungary but Italy came as a surprise. You never know with the military! We could end up in South Carolina or we could stay here another 2 years for all we know...lol.

oh wow!
I think I might be a little bit jealous. My husband refused to go overseas but with my father we went over seas. It is a great opportunity to get out of debt!!! and Hungary is so very rich in history. A lot of sadness from war times and the persecutions against the good Catholic people there. My dear friend is Hungarian and a wonderful cook/baker.
I would go in a heartbeat.

Thank you for that. I don't know anything about Hungary at all. I do know that the area that we would be in is very rural. Since I have never left the States, I am a little scared about the unknown.
