Just heard (here in Calif) that now that the "no talking on a cell phone while driving" law that goes into effect July 1, the next law on schedule is "no text messaging while driving". DOnt know how they wll enforce this one as no one can really see you texting unless you hold it up in front of your face as a cell phone is, so not sure why bother, but wonder what will happen? I think Cell phones shouldn't be used in a moving car by the driver - to may accidents and not only the ones the drive is in, but hte ones the driver caused cause they weren't looking until it was to late. They might be able to swirve around but someone behind them might not. Think it'll fly?

I'm for it. If someone is behind the wheel driving, they need to be doing just that - driving and not talking, texting, eating or anything else. Traffic is hard enough when you have all facilties on alert! But there are some that are going to say they are tired of the government telling them how to live. That came up back when the children in car seats being mandatory and again when the cell phone law was coming out. I just think it is more the government trying to make things safe for all when some don't give a rats. I'd rather the govt tell someone not to talk on the cell phone while driving behind me..or to the side..or in front! IF they are not competant or intelligent enough to figure it out on their own, then someone has to tell them!

Actually I find some of these laws rather redundant (albeit neccessary) since the law in California has always said you must drive with both hands on the steering wheel. Of course I have to wonder how they enforced that law before automatic transmissions LOL

My opinion is that it doesn't matter how good a drive someone is..they are good cause they are paying attention and that is something that can't be done if you are talking on the phone.

What's ridiculous is that there actually has to be a law in effect regarding text messaging while driving. Don't people know when to stop...like maybe when they are driving. Do we really need laws telling us this, shouldn't common sense play a role. Maybe the law is just pertaining to those with no common sense. LOL

Yes it is really ridiculous and really degrading that a race of beings that is dubbed the smartest race of beings in the history of the world have to be not just told, but penalized for doing something so pathetically ridiculous and stupid! Commone sense? Is that still around? I know I have it, but with what I see in the world today, I thought I was among the very few to possess it! Glad to know you do to!

good day... No text no call while driving is a good advocacy in preventing car accidents which can result to unwanted deaths of people.

A very good law to have. But the good things are always the hardest to enforce. Many will complain about violating their civil rights etc. I really don't know why we have any laws as there is always that loop hole that can be used to get out of everything. But - we try and hopefully we can save some lives!

It's a good law but one that is definitely hard to enforce. Remember how many car accidents were caused by cellphone? Gossip blogs also have lots of pictures of celebrities using the phone while driving. It will definitely be a challenge for cops to ticket offenders. Maybe they should impose a really high fine to make up for the challenge. :)

Very difficult. I would bet on an accident, that they would confiscate any cell phone as "evidence" and then pull phone logs to see if they were on the cell when the accident happened. I'd bet insurance companies would make that a demand.

I have a friend that loves to drive and talk on her cell all the time, as a matter of fact I have been a long time with her on the phone before noticing she was driving too.
She seems to think all she will need is a headphone and that she will be allright.
Matter of fact I think I heard something like that on the news too.
Tho I did not pay that much attention. So either my friend and reporters are right, or they will be shocked by July 1.

That is the thing - a head set, ear plug, blue tooth, whatever - is the perfect answer so I don't know what the uproar is all about! Not to mention how much EASIER it is to talk with a head set on! I mean I don't talk while driving, but how annoying to have to keep it to your ear as you move your head, your arm would get tired or if you prop it up on the door frame, you couldn't move your head and gets cramps and just what a stupid thing to do to oneself! But I have not read where sales of ear plugs or bluetooth or head sets have gone up in California! Don't call while driving is the first solution - no one needs to be that accessible and second -why break the law if you don't have to and third - how much easier and accomodating ear plug or head set would be! Nothing like making life harder than it already iS!

My daughter is on the go all the time too and as a CSI she is always away from a desk so contact for her daughter from school and such is necessary. I don't have a problem with cell phones at all - albeit mom raised us and I raise my kids, like millions others - just fine without one and then again, I'd bet pioneers were saying the same about their horses vs. our cars!
But use them wisely and intelligently. While driving is neither.

Why wound anyone txt while driving? Don't they need their hands to use the steering wheel and their eyes to look at the road?

With all the wireless headsets that can be use with cell phones now, there is no reason for there to be an accident from using the cell phone and not paying attention. If you don't have a headset, then you need to pull off the road to use the phone. If you don't, then you deserve to be punished. People need to pay more attention to the world around them and less to their cell phones.

Exactly. Head sets are so common and totally solve the problems. Hands are on the wheel, free to turn you head, etc. I just don't understand why someone would NOT want to use a head set! It looks extrememly uncomfortable to hold that tiny little piece of phone (can't lodge it between ear and shoulder anymore! ) and up to your ear, not support for your arm, surely it gets weighted down... such a simple solution for such a serious issue... go figure

I can understand them having the law about not talking on the phone while driving but you can get a headset for that. The bluetooth is what that is for, but the no texting is something different. I would think that someone had to get in an accident for that to come about. But it would be a little strange too me for someone text messaging while driving. Now it they are stuck in traffic and not moving I can see. Anything other than that would be strange. But you do have some folks that can multi-task real well. I just hope that you don't text message when your driving. Have a good one. PS. That means now when you drive you have to pay more attention to those that are driving around you. Just in case they might be doing those things and you can't see it until it's too late. Have a nice day.

I don't do either. I have the phone on me only for emergencies as usually I have a child with me. If it rings/texts, I don't answer it. Once to where I am going, I'll check it if I want to other times, I figure, "I'm busy, I'll have to call you back later". I mean, I have been in stores looking at things and someone walks up behind me talking and I think they are talking to me and it either scares mea s I am involved in thinking about what I am looking at or i turned around thinking they are talking to me! Just annoying!

Where I live you can only legally use a phone when driving if you use hands-free. It is definitely against the law here to text and drive. Anyone who attempts to do that is a fool and is not fit to be in charge of a vehicle. You can text when you stop or if you are stuck in traffic, but no way should anyone do it when the car is moving.

I live in New York state and the "hands free" law has been in effect for some time now. I agree. I don't think people should be texting and driving. Most people I know can not multi task outside of a motor vehicle, let alone while driving one! There was a fatal accident locally last year around this time. A girl who graduated high school was driving her and a few of her friends to a graduation party. She was on the phone text messaging, driving and doing over 80 mph. Bad combination as all the graduates in the vehicle were killed when she lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree. As I don't think it will stop people from doing it, hopefully it will lessen the amount which in turn could save someone's life:)

And that is the sad part - how are they going to enforce it? WIll it only come into play if there is a trial and needed for proof? WIll the cops pull people over when they see the cells being used while driving? They say it will be hard to do - well, a phone on an ear is not hard to see. Cop sees it, pulls over, driver says he wasn't on cell, cop gives ticket to produce bill showing phone not in use during the 5-10 minutes prior to the time of pull over. Done deal. But I doubt they will.
Texting is harder to see - well not really - unless the person has their head completely down - then just watch the accident happen. but most hold the cell to the steering wheel while they drive so it can be seen. It just needs to be enforced.

Yes, if everyone know and practiced that, there would be no need for such a law. But obviously, many don't know or practice it and the accidents have been the cause of this law. Kind of like, "if they don't want to learn, we will just have to do it for them".

I'm totally for these laws. I think that being on the phone in any way while driving is a distraction. I don't personally understand how someone could be texting and think they are still payin attention to the road.

It has already become law here in Ontario and I think that they are very good laws. No talking on cell phone while driving and no testing, a driver needs to be concentrating on, well driving, of course. I also really like the new law that you can be charged if caught smoking in a car in which children are being transported. It is about time they geot stiffer with the rules for what you can and can't do while driving, so that hopefully not too many more people will have to pay for stupid mistakes with their lives!

I just have to say it - I beleive that's a very good law to have.
Right here in Trinidad I've sat in cars and seen the idiocy that drivers do because they are distracted while driving by calling on the cellphone or texting. Its so easy to cause an accident this way.
If the cops don't see you doing it and they find out you did after the accident there's a penality to match.
Again, this is a very good law to have. It should be implemented here in my country as well.

Isn't it really annoying that something so simple as safety has to be enforced by a law? I mean, common sense says pay attention to the road only when driving. Now, we have to have laws to make people "get it". I hope they enforce it. That will be the real challenge. No sense having the law if it isn't enforced.
