I think they are both intelligent in their own ways. My cat is a good problem solver. My dog recognizes the sounds of his friends cars. My cat can open doors. My dog waits for the door to be opened for him. I train my dog. My cat has me trained.

People feel cats are intelligent because they are independent yet contrary to popular believe cats can be taught simple commands but not being social animals they lack the intelligence of dogs. all the best urban

I think cats are smarter than dogs. After all, they joined us and domesticated themselves instead of being forced into domestication. Dogs are pack animals, they accept humans - well, most of them accept humans - as their pack leaders. Cats decided that living with humans was easier, the rats were there eating the grain, so hang around the humans. Humans then saw that the cats were useful and decided to encourage them to hang around. You can get a dog to run a maze, a cat has to be willing to run a maze. To me that makes them smarter.

Cats are intelligent animals and will not do your bidding. THat is because they are independant. They will do some trick only if it pleases them. They are not like dogs who will do as they are told. Since cats have a mind of their own i think they are more intelligent.

Cats are very intelligent and have fantastic memories, however there is a key factor that separates them from displaying what we see as "obvious" intelligence in dogs. Cats are independent, and do as they please. They don't have the drive to please their "owners" the same way dogs do. They can be taught to do the same tricks as dogs, but they often lack the desire to bother. In some ways you could argue that cats are smarter than dogs. A dog will often take abuse from its owner, and still continue to be docile and obedient. A cat, however, will hold a grudge against those who do it harm. They are different animals so they behave differently, it's hard to expect one to be like the other.
