Insomnia might be a chronic problem for some of you, or you may just have one of those rare nights that you cannot fall asleep. So what do you do when that happens? What is the most unusual, or interesting thing you've done while fighting insomnia and being awake so late at night?

Ready for this? LOL I suffer from insomnia, and used to take prescription sleeping pills. Unfortunately they made me sleepwalk. One night, around midnight, I walked outside naked - headed for my hottub. To get to my hottub you have to go down about 5 steps to the concrete patio. Since I wasn't awake fully, I opted instead to jump off and landed on concrete. I ruptured my achilles tendon and ended up in the hospital for surgery. Now - no more sleeping pills!

I wonder if we were taking the same sleeping pill. I woke up one morning thinking I had a strange dream and I could only remember bits and pieces. I walked outside later and found the front of my car wrecked. It wasn't a dream. I actually got out and drove. I remember hitting a stop sign and going into a ditch. How I got out I don't remember.

I have got up in the middle of the night and cooked a whole meal to eat. sometimes I think I cannot go to sleep right away because I go to bed hungry. I get up and eat and sing onto the internet and work. The next thing I know, I have worked through my sleeping hours and I continue to work my regular scheduled hours too.

That makes it really hard. I hope that doesn't happen a lot.

Hi Spookybutt, Well I don't know if I actually DID do it, but I once had a strange dream where I was woken up in the middle of the night by a strange light in my bedroom, and suddenly there were these tall gray people in silver suits standing around my bed, and I could see and hear stuff but I couldn't speak or move. And then I remember being dragged down a corridor and ending up on a cold table in a big white room, and these gray people did all sorts of naughty things with these big long spiky things. I can't remember much after that besides waking up the next morning back in my bed. But I couldn't sit down for a week...

I have troubles staying asleep when its to hot. Lately, I have been spending a lot of time online at times when I'm normally in bed. Its suppose to stay hot today. Last week, I started working out late night, as it felt good to know I'm losing some pounds. I'm looking forward to buying a few new items.

I used to go walking in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. Now, there is more traffic on my road, so I don't feel so safe walking in the middle of the night anymore. Now I just go walking around my back yard.

Some years back, when I was in a job that I hated, struggling with my weight, and fighting sleep apnea, I would actually either make or cook food either in my sleep or being so tired that I could not remember it. I specifically remember biting into a sandwich one night and it waking me because it hurt my mouth. It seems that I had put a small lid (like those on a tub of butter but smaller) and had bitten into it....ouch!!!

I used to have a trampoline, and would jump on it. I would get up and have cocoa and rock in the rocking chair when my first hubby was ill and I woke up. Kind of a ritual that always put me back to sleep.

I have gotten up and gone to Walmart a couple of times when I just could not get to sleep. Its the only thing around here open all night and I didn't have to fight the crowd that is usually there.

That is weird. The customer service is closed here but there are checkers up front at the registers.

I used to do that, but they wouldn't have any checkers out to check my items out. I had to go to customer service (how is customer service open to have things returned, and no one is there to check out people?) and they don't have the ability to scan fruit or veggies.

I don't really have it now, but long time ago, I had it really bad. I could stay awake for days without sleep. I started reading Insomnia by Stephen King. I'm glad to say I never experienced what the main character did in the book. Late at night, when my take my dog out for the last time for bed, interesting things goes on in my neighborhood. One night, I missed it, I was inside on the computer. 4 people ran up and down my street naked, 3 guys and a girl. I wish my neighbor called me for that one, .

Hi There, Insomnia is something I have struggled greatly with. I think I have finally gotten over it, but I had this chronic problem for years. I would tend to get up in the middle of the night and basically go out, get a coffee and just drive around the neighbourhood. I also took it as a chance to do extra work around the house and for my job. It is not a fun thing to have! :( cheers,

No, it's not! When I was going to school full time I would get ahead in my reading for class, but now I don't have that to occupy my time. I mean, if I turned the TV on, there are so many infomercials I can tolerate!

The oddest thing i have ever done in the middle of the night is that i went to sauna, yes thats right sauna. I felt so cold and i couldn't sleep at all, so i put the sauna on and watched some TV while it kept warming. Then i went to sauna, and after that back to sleep, and i slept long after that. I really helped a lot.

I'm not sure it's unusual but I let TV lull me to sleep and sometimes I'm still awake at 4am.

Me... I usually just end up cleaning the whole house top to bottom... If I didn't rent I'd do all the vaccumming too. Then there are those nights that I'll just eat and I mean opening cans and just eating black olives out of the can or tuna or frosting or whatever. Then there where a couple of nights of insomnia that I spent here... Anything to pass the time. I don't have insomnia as bad as I use to but I do remember getting more done when I did.

Oddest things that I've ever done in the middle of the night: Call my spouse and chat for four hours while he was on the job. We're talking 2 am or later. Organize the kitchen cabinets. Organize the closet. Stay up late posting on MyLot, like now (it's 3:10 AM EST) Plan my future, then scrap the plans in desperation as I try to get some sleep. Make odd promises to the wall that I'll do anything if only allowed to get a few hours sleep before I have to get up again. Dejunk my computer of spyware and old files that I no longer use. Blog and update my movie blog. That's always fun. Surf for coupons online and freebies. Love doing that. Just name it and I've done it during a bout of insomnia!

Back in the days when I was responsible just for myself and I couldn't sleep, I'd clean my flat. Not just clean it, but make it shine all over, including the ceiling and the walls. Now, having young ones, it isn't so easy. I spend my sleepless times on the computer catching up with discussions here or on the parenting site I'm with. I find that often I really have to concentrate on my responses and that it can be better than a cup of hot milk! Not that Mylot is boring, far from it, just that my brain works hard and tires quickly. I should be in bed right now, but, while feeling tired, I know it would take forever for me to go to sleep. Bubs is giving me a good kicking and has been for much of the night (it is 2:30am here).

What I do maybe is really odd to others but I consider it just normal. There are times when I can't sleep and I will just wash my dirty clothes. It helps me sleep well and somehow is advantageous to me. But then I only do it rarely now because I have read that it is not advisable to do heavy work before going to sleep.

I don't know if I have done anything really odd. I guess I've eaten an entire hearty meal at 4 in the morning. It was kind of a mood killer afterwards, but I still do it when I didn't eat earlier. That's about it, though. I've also gone for a bike ride at 5 in the morning, but I don't know if that is considered too odd.

The oddest thing that I have ever done in the middle of the night is pierce my lip. I was undereducated in how much damage I could potentially be doing to myself, but luckily I did not hit anything. I left it in there for the next morning and most of the next school day, but then I took it back out after the librarian (I used to work in the library at the school) told me that she would tell my mother if I did not. Back then, I was unsure of how my mother would react to that. Turns out, she doesn't really care as long as we get things done the right way.
