Would you turn your children in if they committed a crime?

June 21, 2008 5:18am CST
Just lately there has been stories in the news, here in the UK, about parents who have gone to the police and turned their children in after finding out that they had committed a serious crime. I would like to think that if any of my children committed a serious crime that i would do the same. As i feel i could not live with myself knowing that information and not doing anything about it. How about you would you turn your children in and why?. If you would not, why not?

If I knew my child had committed a crime or was planning on committing a crime, then I would turn them in,because if I did not do anything about it,the guilt would kill me,but I can understand why some parents would not turn their kids in.

Though I love my children, I would turn them in. Children learn from the examples we set. If we, as someone else posted, turn a blind eye, then we are teaching them to shrug off responsibility for actions. Not only that, in my opinion, we are shrugging our responsibility to society. How would we feel if someone committed a crime against us and the parent protected the child to the earths end. In my eyes, protecting a child also means teaching responsibility in all things. It would not mean I love my child any less, though they may think that at the time. My only hope would be they would come around and learn from what happened and have a higher value on family and life as a whole.

Well said. I agree we have to teach children to take responsibility. Thank you for your response.

LOL you're damn skippy I would! There is no way in hell I would risk going to prison for covering up some crime my child commited...Do the crime, do the time thats how it works with me and its non-negotable..

I like the way you think. That is a good point that we could end up in prison. Thanks for your response

Yes I would turn them in. My mother always say that if one is big enough to do the crime then he should be big enough to do the time. No parents should go through this ordeal but peer pressure is a hard load and some of our children is unable to avoid it.

That is very true. I am sure some children feel very pressured to do things they shouldn't at times. Thanks for your response.

I don't know if I can do that. Though I am not a mother yet, I know that the prison cell is a very unpleasant place. As what my mother has been protecting me, I would be protecting my child that way and if these things happen, thats the time I can decide. For now, no I won't turn my child in. I have no reason yet. But its no. Take care =)

You might feel different once you are a mother. But i can understand why you would not as prison is not suppose to be a pleasant place to be. Thanks for your reply.

They do say that. But your child's crime could have torn someone elses family apart. Thanks for your input

I would try to get them to turn themselves in first. Then I would stand behind them every step of the way.

Thats a good idea it would be better if they could face up to their crimes. Thanks for your response.
