I read somewhere that Pizza and Pasta were invented by Arabs during the time they were occupying Sicily but I can't remember where . The Middle East is home to the species of wheat that eventually was planted all over the world so it's not so unlikely that things MADE FROM wheat originated there too . However and wherever it started Italians make the BEST pizzas in the world , Funghi , Napolitano , Margherita , Diavolo just some varieties of Italian pizza . I had the opportunity to eat pizza AND pasta in Italy (and gelato = ice cream another Italian gift to the world) and I'm telling you Italian cuisine RULES hahaha

Sorry according to wikipedia Pizza is a pure Italian invention , specifically in Naples , it could not have been invented before them simply because the Old World did not know TOMATO , which was discovered in the New World and was thought to be poisonous . Since almost all modern pasta dishes require tomato sauce , you could say that pasta too as we know it today was invented by the Italians . Damn those Italians love to eat !!

Pizza invented in Italy thousand year ago but take current shape in medivieal period.
Pizza most clearly took the form that we are now familiar with in pre-Renaissance Naples, a large city in central Italy. Poor peasants used their limited ingredients (wheat flour, olive oil, lard, cheese and natural herbs) to make a seasoned, flat bread garnished with cheese. Mozzarella cheese was one benefit of an invasion from Asian peoples, who brought the water buffalo to Italy. Today, the best mozzarella cheese is still made from water buffalo milk.
The word pizza, as it is currently spelled, also emerged some time in the Middle Ages. It was used to describe both sweet and salty pies that were becoming increasingly popular among Italian aristocracy.
