Should students be encouraged to evaluate and criticize their teachers?

In many universities, students are asked to evaluate the teachers after each course. Some people believe the system has many advantages to the teachers and students. Others argue that it would lead to poor discipline. Indeed, evaluation of their teachers by students has both pros and cons. There are many drawbacks in student assessment. First of all, students are very young and, compared with their teachers are less knowledgeable both in theory and practice on a subject. Therefore, they are unable to evaluate their teachers' performance in a sound way. Secondly, student assessment would lead to poor discipline in the classroom. If each student is allowed to decide on what, how and when to learn, classroom management would become impossible. Thirdly, in order to gain a better evaluation, teachers would seek to please each of the student by lowering the study requirements. This would do harm to students' academic performance in the long run. However, advocates of student assessment have their reasons. Firstly, this kind of feedback can be used to improve teachers' performance. Teaching methods can only be successful if they are student-centered. Therefore, listening to the students' constructive suggestions, teachers will have a better idea of what students' needs are and can adjust their teaching to meet them. Secondly, the process of writing evaluation will help students think in their own way independently. Students should be encouraged to learn by even challenging their teachers' thinking. Thirdly, the matter could be considered in a commercial way. Teachers are those who provide paid educational services while students, paying for their education, are customers. In this way, it can be fully justified that students have the right to evaluate the services they receive. In my own opinion, students' evaluation of teachers would be beneficial to both teachers and students. Teachers can adjust their teaching according to the information. Students' ability of independent thinking and learning can be greatly improved. Moreover, the practice is the outcome of market economy. Students have rights to evaluate their teachers.

I believe that a student assessment should be both optional and anonymous. In high school, it was not encouraged or even suggested, but I typed up a letter to the principal about a teacher that was giving her students problems. I tried writing it with constructive criticism of that teacher--I pointed out the problems that she had and offered suggestions for what I felt that she could improve upon. I did this in the middle of the school year, and I think that the principal showed her, because she seemed to somewhat improve. Students are afraid to offer their opinions because they are afraid to be judged. Similar to people who are asked to give statements when they know information about a crime--they are afraid that something bad might happen to them if they are a part of it. Some students probably feel that their opinions do not matter. And, of course the teachers would bias the evaluations at the end by altering their assignments. this is why the evaluations should be optional, and as I said, anonymous. If the students feel like they have nothing to lose, they may be more willing to step up. If the teachers alter their lessons to gain better reviews, then they are depriving their students of the education that they should be receiving.

I just am going through teaches college, and in my opinion I do believe that teachers should be evauluated by their students. That is if the students can do this without wanting to attack the teacher through the survey. I think that some teachers do need to improve their teaching methods, and by asking students in their class how they can improve will help students the following year. Teachers get so set in their ways that sometimes they do need to be reminded.

You have written very well written post and I somewhat agree with you, since it has a possibilty that the classroom learning experience might improve. But I have an opposite viewpoint regarding this topic. I really do not think that the teachers should be judged by students as the students and teachers are on 2 different levels and the students are not in the position to judge their instructors. This evaluation process should be done by their own fellow teachers with inputs given by the students. Each instructors should be judged their own as they are in a better position to comprehend the overall picture. I still consider teaching one of the nobel professions. Excessive commercelisation will lead to degradation of our learning centers as the teachers will focus more on earning money than imparting knowledge.

I absolutely believe that students should criticize and evaluate teachers. Ratemyprofessor.com is the best site that has ever been invited. I find myself not taking a class unless I check out the teacher first. Deciding what, how, and when to learn should be left to the state standards or the university. In college, students and their parents pay for classes and therefore teachers shouldn't be left without some type of responsibilties to teach properly.

Absolutely, I agree that students must have the right to evaluate their own teacher. Since, through this way the teachers can have assessment towards themselves they already given out their best and quality of educational services to their consumers which are their students. Although, students are young individuals but it doesn't mean that they can't figure out if they have educational taken care by their own teachers.
