Are you an Optimist or a Pessimist?

An optimist looks at life in a positive way, believing in good things. He expects the best possible outcome of a given situation.
A pessimist on the other hand, is the opposite of an optimist, he expects or looks at the worst possible thing that could happen in a situation. He assumes the worst thing that could happen.
Which one are you? I am an optimist and I like to believe that if I do my very best I'd get the best possible outcome in everything I do or in any event that I attend to.

I am between an Optimist and a Pessimist. I won't allow myself to be over optimistic or over pessimistic. I have to see things between real and dream. When you are overoptimistic, you often seem to live over the ground. Sometimes, it is a good thing but most of the time, you won't see the real problem. Then, when you are over pessimistic, it is not good thing, either. Because it makes you depressed. Finally, you won't be able to do anything. In other words, I have tried things from different perspectives.

Can I add on to this interesting definition? An optimist can also be a person who have tried but failed. On the other hand, a pessimist is a person who failed to try. For me, I rather try and fail, than to fail to try. Am I an optimist?

Wow, interesting. Be my guest, I actually appreciate it. Yes indeed you are an optimist you've said it yourself. hehe. Indeed it is better to try and fail. Trying entails hoping to achieve what's best while not trying at all is like giving up and losing. Thank you for sharing!

I'm more optimistic and pessimistic. I'm not either tho. Sometimes I like to think the glass is half full, sometimes I think its half empty. Like currently I think less than 3 weeks and i can start eating normal food again. While some other day i might think Oh boy...Still 3 weeks to go...When does this stop? So i can't say im neither.

I'd like to say I'm in the middle. Lol. :D
Because most of the time there are situations that catch me off guard and I tend to be negative for an entirety of time. xD
On the other hand there are some instances wherein I'd talk to myself and say.. "Hey, there's no point staying all that negative because there are better things to come.."
Ack. I'm weird. Lol.

I am at the moment an optimist.
A few years back and even up to last year I was a big pessimist. Alot of things have changed in my life and I also read this book called The Secret.
I now try to keep a positive mindset no matter what the situation.
I am much happier in life, even though I am still not where I want to be I do slowly but surely see things coming together.
It is also healthier and a more "light feeling" when you are happy.

Hi selece,
The Secret is a book which basically tells you that whatever you attract to you will come to you. If you think negative thoughts then those negatives thing may happen to you and the same goes for optimism. In other words you can control the outcome of things in your life.
I don't fully practice to be honest, I found it hard to be optimistic at first but I have realized over time that even the small thoughts work.
It is up to the person them self to believe it if they want to. The girl that recommended the book to me actually doesn't believe in this method but I like it personally.

The secret? Is it a good book? I'm happy for you, that you are seeing things come together for you. I'm sure everything would turn out well. I agree with the "light feeling" when you're happy. That's why we should do our best to be happy. Smile always. Thank you for sharing!

It depends. When it comes to myself, I am optimistic. I believe that I can do whatever it is that I put my mind to. I can, and I will. I always seem a bit pessimistic about test scores, but I like to tell myself AFTER I take the test that my score is going to be terrible, just so that I will be happier with whatever I get. When it comes to others, I am a bit of a pessimist. It kind of fuels my paranoia and fears that I have when I am around others, and unfortunately strengthens my lack of trust for other people.

I get your point, but at least being optimistic lets you find the strength to do what you want and need to do. On the other hand, yes, being pessimistic about others would certainly cause in lack of trust. But it is actually something that can be resolved, in ways that only you could know. I hope someday you'll overcome that. Thanks for sharing!

I'm an optimist. I don't think that you can do social justice work, which I do with a sort of obsessive favor, without being an optimist. Whenever I get really down on the state of world I repeat to myself over and over like a mantra, a famous quote my Dr. Martin Luther King, "The ark (of the universe) always bends towards justice." It really helps!

I am a pessimist before.. I always look things into a negative way, especially if something bad happens to me. I tend to blame others, and one point in my life that I blame God, on why these bad things happening to me, to us, my family..
lots of questions I asked, have I done something wrong ?.or are you mad at me? something like that..
but as I learned now on how to embrace life, I am now an Optimistic. and the moment that I let God be in the center of my life, I realize that life isn't a problem to solve, but a gift to enjoy. before I always ask God whenever I do have a problem, but I rarely thank him for whatever blessings I receive from him. but now, I always thank God for whatever things I receive or whatever happens to me, whether good or bad.
everything happens for a reason. and whatever happens to us, lets take it positively. I know that God wouldn't give trials if he knows that we can't handle it. and be thankful for we learn from all those trials that we are up to.

I was like that before. There was a time when I blamed God for the painful things that happened in my life. But now, even though His reasons are still unclear, I have faith in Him. I am glad that you now see things in positive ways, with that you can go through anything and surpass your trials in life. I couldn't agree more with what you said. Thank you so much for sharing!

I'm definitely an optimist! I've been one my entire life, except maybe during times of great depression because something really bad was happening.
But, yes, I'm an optimist. At this time in my life, whether things go right or not, I still keep that attitude.
I read something once and got a chuckle out of it: "If you are an optimist, you are often disappointed. If you are a pessimist, you are never disappointed and often quite pleasantly surprised!" LOL

I'm more of an optimist. I always try to think of a happy ending for myself. otherwise, I'd be so desolate I wouldn't fight anymore. It's hope for something better at the finish line that really keeps me going. There are time when I'd be really frustrated or fed-up but after that brief interlude, I'll be back to my old happy self again.

For me it all depends on how I feel and what is going on in my life at that particular time. Most of the time I'm optimist about life and the future, only because my father brought me up to be this way. Recently, my father passed away and I see myself becoming more pessimistic when times get rough. I'm working on being happier about life and about things that happen in my life. It's seems that everything keeps going wrong since the passing of my father.

Losing someone we love would always be one of the most painful things in life and it is very hard for us to move on or see things in positive ways. Since the passing of my father, I've also had many problems. But somehow I know it made me a better person. I'm glad you're working on being happier about life and the things that happen in your life. You'll get there. I'm sure it's how your dad wants it. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for responding to my post and thank you for sharing your own experience. I know my father would want me to always be happy and I am trying to be that way. But it is extremely hard to not be sad when I think about him. I miss everything about him and know he's in a better place.

I'm sometimes being optimistic and sometimes pessimist. It depends on the situation I'm in. I like to be optimistic because it makes my life easier and go fun. I like to be a pessimist because it makes me think of the precautions to be taken for the future. So its better to have both kind of natures for a Successive life. Optimistic and Pessimistic, both exists in the life of a person. Nobody in the world is completely optimistic or completely pessimistic. Have a nice day !

Hi selece, I have always been an optimist although there have been difficult times. It isn't always easy but it is the best way to live. My thought that everything always works out for the best, has been tested severely, on more than one occasion in my life, but I feel now as I look back on more than 60 years, that my positive attitude has been the way to go. Blessings.

I describe myself as an optimist, but weirdly other people always seem to think that I'm a pessimist. I always expect misfortune to happen on a regular basis, because this is my observation of life, but I also expect to survive and overcome difficulties, so in the long term I'm an optimist.

I would say a mix of both. But I'm verging on pessimistic. :( But I'm getting older and it's becoming more and more important for me to TRY to be optimistic. At least.

Mostly I call being realistic, I tend to be more of a pessimist when I make my decisions because, that way I can expect the worst situation and then be prepared for it.. normally in situations, I have a back up plan in case my solution doesn't work and a back-back-up plan if my back up plamn fails.. This helps me in mostly anything in life... I don't assume the best and I try to prevent the worst from happening. That way, I dont get disappointed and in case something happens I can be prepared...

It all comes down on how a person deals with every situation. I guess this works well for you, and if it does, then there's nothing wrong about being a pessimist. Come to think of it, that's the positive side of being one. There are pessimists who tend to mess up things because they look at everything on the worst side. Thanks for sharing!
