How Many Actually Check Their Facts Before Posting?

My short time here on MyLot has given me much enjoyment, some sadness and a few tears. It has also given me much aggravation and frustration as I see so many that want to turn conversations into racist, religious and discrimination debates.
A great debate is awesome, don't get me wrong. But how many of you actually check your facts before you post something that is totally inaccurate in an attempt to "prove your point"?
Just recently I entered into a conversation about politics, and trust me, I never will again as this election has turned into a three ring circus of hate. However, I have someone spouting off to me about the injustices done to his people over 400+ years, and crying about unjustified police shootings due to color, when every article I have read states that the police had every reason to defend themselves? And trust me, before I chose to tell him once again, that I will no longer argue with him in a public forum, I did go and check his facts, all of which appear to be another attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of the people.
I could argue this all day long and into the night, but I won't. However, I would love to know...
Do you check your facts before you post or do you just throw out whatever you have heard from friends, family or acquaintenances?

I don't usually check my "facts" before entering into a discussion because I usually avoid discussions that require "facts". I usually stick to the discussions that are more about opinions.
That being said.
I've never followed politics much. Not sure why. I know I should, but I can never keep up, I guess.
It isn't that I don't think these things are important, but I am the type of person that always sees that there is always more than one side to a story and I see the grey areas in life.
What you said about this persons commetns in your other discussion and the conversation about unjustified police shootings. YOu can't be suggestion that there have been NO unjustivied police shootings can you? You can't be suggesting that police never lie can you? You can't be thinking that a police officers WORD is FACT can you?
Yes, sometimes, maybe even usually, police shootings are justified. But, I believe very strongly that there ARE bad cops. That there are cops who let their power go to their heads and use it to bully people.
It doesn't take researching FACTS to know that this is true. You just have to open your eyes and observe human behavior once in a while.

You're welcome. Anytime. I had a friend who was wearing a T-shirt once that said "Everyone is entitled to my opinion" lol.
I'm not sure if you thought I missed the point of your discussion. There was a spot there where it looked like that's what you thought. But then you thanked me at the end and said I gave you something to think about.
I think what I did was answer your question and then added some thoughts that were somewhat related.
I have to admit, that I have sat there and watched two people have annimated argument about to different points. Each would tell the other that they were missing the point, neither seeming to realize they were talking about two completely different things.
Again, I don't think that's exactly what we're doing here, but it just made me think of that.
I admit, sometimes I do get off track, but if you try real hard, you'll find some small thing that makes my point relative.
And clearly I'm not babbling now to earn a couple extra cents, cuz these follow up replies don't earn us anything.
Have a great day and take care!

Of course I am not suggesting or stating that there haven't been unjustified police shootings. There are bad cops, there are bad people, there are bad dogs. In fact, I can find bad in myself as well as in any person that I know. Give me a few minutes, and I can probably find something bad about someone I don't know as well.
My point was NOT to start an argument, but make people wake up and smell the coffee. If you are going to attack, attack with the facts. I never stated in any conversation that there wasn't unjustified crimes committed on a daily basis by people. My point is - Don't bring up stuff that you haven't researched or that you know nothing of, other than what you think you believe from the office coffee pot bashing. Ahh but who cares about the point to a conversation? We'd rather dash off those few lines and make a cent ...then run off to the next huh?
I think it's funny that everyone is on this site to earn a couple of cents a day, but they don't want to work for that couple of cents. Nothing comes easy, nothing comes free.
Anyway, thank you for your comments. You gave me another angle to think about and it is appreciated.

Facts? Nope, I just give them my two cents worth, which, due to current inflation is worth maybe a quarter of a cent LOL
Seriously...if I were trying to get a point across that were factual I would certainly do my homework first and verify the facts :)
You are right, this election has turned into a three ring circus. I'd say send in the clowns, but they are already here, running for office LOL

Peope are more willing to believe BS because its enttaining and they don't have to think about it. the more fantastic it is as fodder for gossip and converstaion.
Its kind of like a bunch of war veterans sitting around a table and trading lies. Everyone knows its crap. buts its damned interesting crap theyu can laugh at. Re: the bar scene with Falstaff and Henry in "Henry The V". Play the games where they are played. but don't ever try to play them outside.

Agreed Fwid! There are many times when I just want to give my opinion, and while I try to do it polictically correct, I sometimes fail! Thanks for the smile you gave me too!

When it comes to politics , it isn't about which article states what it is the person's point of view. There is some truth to every statement because of the person's pint of view. But I can see where trying to tell a person their "facts" are inaccurate would start a huge argument.
I always check to see if I got the spelling and my facts straight before I post. But I have no desire to talk about politics. I usually stick to subjects I know like movies. But even then I have to check what year a movie came out or am I remembering the correct actor, etc.

Hehehe...you know I always stayed away from politics until I met my husband. So maybe I'll go start a pillow fight with him for getting me into trouble! Thanks so much for your comments!

There is a reason I stay away from those kind of topics. One of I think the saddest things that has become the "Norm" in this country is that people for the most part have become sheeple. They hear one side of the news (which ever way their preferred news channel chooses to slant it.) and decide that it is fact and don't take the time to see for themselves. they then take this information as "fact" and spout it off to anyone who will listen.
A great example of this is global warming. Kat had to do a research paper on the topic of global warming. She looked at all the information she could find and took facts and cited her work to the information she found. She was the only one in her class to state that global warming was not what it was being made out to be. During her research she found that as much as they are talking about global warming today they were talking about global cooling 20 (or so)years ago.
The teacher gave her an F on the paper saying that it went against the information he had. I went up to the school to meet with the teacher. I asked him if shehad all her facts cited correctly, he said yes. I asked if the paper was written well and he said yes. So I asked him how can you fail her on a project simply because her views do not line up with your own? All he could say was well umm, they were supposed to write it based off the movie we watched in class. that movie happened to be the Al Gore movie about global warming. I told him that she did write it based off the movie she just did more research and presented a different point of view.
Needless to say her final project grade was an A. I was on the debate team in school. I never go into a battle of wits unarmed!

If a person is raised to believe the worst of others,
then they will carry that belief into
adult hood and spread it around until it
affects others.
Every race and religion has had their
fair share of mistreatments, dating back
before the time when the Christians were
fed to the lions.
Shall we digress even further back to examine
injustices?
To the person that offended you with their comments, I
would say, check your facts. Every woman on the planet
can tell you that she still (to this modern day) has
been prejudiced against.
And we live in modern times!
That kind of thing shouldn't be going on.
But it is.
As far as getting wrapped up in a political or race
debate? No thanks!
I don't like to argue.
No, really, I don't!
It's not worth it.

Well, I would do research if it was for my final year project in college but for mylot? I do not think that you need to be 100% accurate because if we are wrong, i believe it's other users' courtesy to correct it and that is the point of a discussion which is to hear what people say and correct it of they are wrong and vice versa.

You are SO right. I used to post in controversial topics but I don't anymore. The man reasons were that many people just kept going on and on about the same point. And then they gave you negative ratings because they didn't agree with you. It's really terrible. In fact I'm not sure why people even bother answering when they know that other people are going to start a fight. You are right, there are lots of people like that who will just start quoting things even though they didn't happen. Have a wonderful day

I do my best to check my facts before posting, especially on a controversial subject like politics. I try to avoid those subjects whenever possible, though. One time I corrected a bit of misinformation someone posted about one of the presidential candidates. I was then accused of being one of his "fanatic" supporters. Sometimes people can't be swayed by the facts.

Sometimes I think that when people start a discussion they do not realise what they are doing and sometimes the discussion can get out of hand real fast. Not only is it important to check out facts before posting anything a bit sensitive it is also important to get the wording of the discussion/debate right. Sometimes people can read it in a totally different way to what the person intends them to read it as.
This is one reason that I would never go along that road of discussions, sometimes even with my normal everyday discussions I have found that the way I have written things has come across to others very different from what I intended!

Actually I have researched some of the stuff I wrote on here. I won't write something unless I'm sure about it. I hate when people write things they don't have a clue about. I mean I know this is the internet so you can't believe a thing you see, but it still irritates me.

Hi rantingqueen
If I stumble on a discussion where I beleive the information is open for debate and I have a differing opinion on the subject matter, I will research the facts before replying to the person.
I enjoy a good discussion and resepctable debates are great too but I would want to check my facts before jumping into the frying pan.

I think you have said it right, Politics is a sore subject right now! And you should check the facts before you post, But, I am the same way I'd rather not talk about politics today the way things are... too many people want to critisize everyone if you know what I mean.
