Which food could you not live without?

We had a rice dish for dinner tonight, which got me thinking about the rice rations around the globe recently. Now my family could live just fine if there were no rice in our part of the world, as we have it very rarely, once a month or less usually.
But I began thinking about what would happen if there was a potato famine today. My family eats potatoes 4 times a week if not more. We love them, and are always looking for new recipes or new ways to cook them. Sure we could survive without potatoes, but it would be difficult for us, as it's a constant in our meals.
Which food do you think your family could not live without?

It has to be rice for me.I love me a bowl rice and gravy! I could eat that for ever and ever and not get tried of it. Same with chicken. Those are my two foods.

cheese or potatoes.big eaters of both.
coffee though a beverage would cause some major problems too-it would get ugly real fast in this house if they didn't have that.

That's funny, but I bet it's oh so true. We are not big coffee drinkers, but my friends that are couldn't function without it.

In my case it would be mainly rice and also bread to quite an extent. Here are some delicious rice recipes that I love.

I agree, bread is something else we have frequently, a few times a day at least. It's versatile and would be difficult to work around. Thanks for responding.

Certainly I could not live without potatos.
We love to have baked potatos and french fries.
It is a very nutritious food and could sustain
us for many days.
If I had to pick other things that I could
not live without, then I would say, chicken or
onions and carrots.
I use those ingredients often in all
my recipes and they are much favored in my home!

We are a rice eating country and we have 3 serious meals in a day that involves rice. It feels a little weakening if we won't have rice at all. But talking about survival, I know we can live eating bread or fruits wihtout rice but we're just used to eating it with at least one viand.

I didn't mean as in survival, "can't live without" is just sort of a phrase, such as "I can't live without my computer" well I know I can, I'd just rather not, LOL. Thanks for your response.

Pasta would probably be the thing I would miss the most, although I suppose it could be substituted with rice quite easily.
We also eat allot of potatoes, but we grow them ourselves which at least means we have some control over the crop. We've just harvested this years, which have been abit disappointing actually. Thankfully our neighbours have done as well as ever though, and have given us quite allot for helping them out.

Hi Katsmeow. In my country we eat rice every day and most of the people beens too. Rice and been is the base of our meals. But I don't eat been every day. My family eat rice most of the days and we like very much rice. I think that will be hard if we don't have rice any more but we can eat potatoes as well since we like them very much too. What we really cannot live without is vegetables. We can change rice for another thing but vegetables how you can replace it?

I don't think we could live without snack foods. Ice cream is really big in the house. And so are cakes and cookies. And you better grab some fast. We're not the healthiest bunch, but we're working on it. As for real food, we all eat different things. But turkey burgers are essential. So I guess it would be the turkey burgers as the choice we could never live without.

Peanut butter! I could not live without peanut butter. I like peanut butter on or with almost anything and everything. :-)
As a kid, I took peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to school every day from first grade through 12th grade.
For snacks in the evening, I would eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Or I would eat ice cream with peanut butter and chocolate on top.
I even make salad dressing by mixing ranch or bleu cheese dressing with peanut butter!

That's a lot of peanut butter, and can I just say some of it sounds really gross. PB and pickles?
Thanks for responding! I hope you never run out of peanut butter.

We would not be able to live without rice. This is our main staple and I cannot imagine having a meal without rice. I like bananas and sometimes when I cannot eat bananas for a week I would feel like I could not survive for another week without it but bananas are not rice. Without rice we would probably die.

i cannot live without rice for every meal.. here in the Philippines, rice is very much special for our every meal.. it becomes necessary to have a serving of rice so that we can be full.. we eat rice with viand.. one cup of rice gives us enough energy for one whole day, that's why we may not eat lunch and dinner as long as we had a full breakfast.. rice is really a part of our lives as Filipinos, and rice is one of the necessities in our country today..

Haha, easy question: French fries. It's what we belgians are famous for! I don't know why they call it "french" fries though, they should change the name :)
I (and my family to) definitely could not live without these fries. They're so good and tasty, despite of the high fat percentage they contain and that they're not so very healthy to eat.. But eating them once in a week won't be very harmfull I think. What I like the most about it is the fact that we have so many sauces to put on it: andalouse, mayonaise, ketchup, pickles, mammoth sauce, pickles, joppy, sweet mayonaise, stewed meat sauce, tartare, and so on..
I bet there are a couple between them you've never heard of before, aren't they?
Greetz.
