Cell phone problem in Cambridge, Boston

hi i'm in boston now for Harvard Summer School, the 8-week session. Well I didn't bring my cellphone with me to the U.S so the communication now is a big problem since I would travel a lot with my friends. However, I don't want to buy a new cellphone just for these 8 weeks since mine at home is in good condition. I just don't want waste that money. So do you have some good advice? Something like the cellphone rental? Or is it possible if I buy one now and when I leave after 8 weeks I could return it and get some money back? What's more, what kind of talking plans do you recommend? I'm not a people on the phone chatting much. Thanks for the help.
