Hi honeydew,
Sorry to hear that this happened to you. I remember when I first started to look for ways to make money online, nearly everything that popped up wanted me to put out some amount of money and I just may have done it too, if I had the money to put out but I couldn't spare the risk of that cash so I did more research and found a few sites that are free to join and DO pay!
myLot is one of them so you are already on the right track, another I use is called review stream and there is 07bux.net and well as amazon's mturk.
If you want more info just check out my blog (link in my profile) and I wish you good luck!

I usually join free sites.A I have been there before with data entry stuff and lost money.I do my one site and you can get a 50.00 visa giftcard in 4 and a half weeks.Providing you make 1,500 points that you are allowed to make everyday. It is a legit site and free to join. You do get paid.It can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to get the card but I figured its free money that I didnt have to pay.It usually takes me an hour or less per day on the site per day.You earn points for reading jokes, requesting people as friends,Reading health articles, etc.Their is a bunch of ways to earn on the site. You can make money on some sites for spending some money but they are hard to find.

Sorry that happened to you. I don't use any sites that want money from me. I don't trust them so I stick to programs that are free. I'm working 2 good programs now and I enjoy them. I make decent money off them. I will never sign up for a site that asks for money upfront.

I am really sorry. I have learned also that I do not sign up for anything that I have to pay for. If it is not free then I don't want it.

I have been ripped of a couple of times and I have learned my lesson. I no longer pay anyone money even if it's going to make me the richest millionaire on the Internet. I ain't a sucker no more!

I agree with you, be very careful of hese online money makers, I think they are scammers only, I was cheated before.
They will ask you to pay something like registration fees, and get job for you, this is one kind of scammer. After get the money, they will do nothing. And will give a lot of excuses.
I'm so angry with them, but there is no rules to block them in Malaysia.
So I just can advise all readers to be careful of the money makers, they are scammers.
