Most people under pressure tend to have that problem, especially if they cannot find a solution for whatever is pressuring them, or if they do not like the solution that they have come up with. However, if it is lasting after the stress is giving him problems, then it is dragging on much further than it should be given the chance to.
I do have a suggestion, but it does not work for everyone. Rather than medication, it is simply training one's body: People with Insomnia often realize it when they are laying there night after night and finding sleep impossible. And when they do finally fall asleep, it is at the wrong time. Laying there, trying to fall asleep is part of the problem. The more a person lays awake in bed, the less the person associates the bed with sleeping. So, to your friend with insomnia, if he cannot fall asleep, then he needs to get out of bed. He needs to find something productive to do in another room, such as jogging in place or crunches, or something that is both physically and mentally stimulating. If he starts feeling tired, then he should go lay down again. If, after a decent waiting period, he still cannot fall asleep, then he needs to get back up.
During the day, between his daily tasks, he probably needs to exercise a bit more. Instead of driving to the coffee shop a few blocks away, he needs to walk. Small things like that will help free up a bit of the stress he may be feeling. Even though some disagree, exercise is a great factor in relieving stress, or other negative emotions. That is why, when people are upset, some people tell them to "walk it off." It is more than just a phrase! I hope that your friend is able to find a solution to his insomnia. Best of luck!
