It would be great if plastic were made to be biodegradable

We use plastic bags everyday because of its durability as compared to paper bags. However, when the plastic bag has become dirty or get holes, we can't use them anymore and we have to throw them in the trash. The huge amounts of plastic being thrown away obviously has damaging effects to our environment, and our ozone layer. I hope someone out there would find ways to make plastics biodegradable or reusable, if nobody hasn't done it yet. Soon. It would help our environment a great deal. What other alternatives to plastic do you have in mind?
