Well This is the question considering most of the people in India as well as some parts of the world. The best thing that you can do is to use it as less as possible & where ever it is required the most, if your distance is less than 10-20 min of walk i think it is best to walk it not only saves fuel but it also makes your mind fresh and active, your blood circulation will be good & u will not face any obesity problems. One more thing that u need to keep in mind while you are driving is that don't go at a very high speeds maintain an optimum speed of about 45-55 kmph where the consumption of fuel is at its least. keep this thing in mind, small saving add up to a huge amount at the end. The best thing that the government can do is not to susidise the fuel but to look at other sourses of fuel like hydrogen fuel,Natural gas etc. which is pollution free as well as very economical

Only use the car if it is extremely necessary for you to do so. Walk. It is good exercise for you. Join carpools, conserve energy and electricity by not watching tv all day or putting on the airconditioning the whole day or yusing all those push button gadgets which use up a lot of electricity. Use a bike for long distance errands and exercises. Enjoy the outdoors as often as possible so you don't have to stay in the house the whole day when you are not working. Go to the shopping malls if you want to enjoy free airconditioning but don't shop. In short, vut down on all those unnecessary expenses especially those which require the use of electricity to turn on. The list is endless. use your imagination
