Plastic Grocery Bags...

When I was still living in the Philippines, when you go to the grocery stores, the first plastic bag for your things are free but the second one is not. It was the rule so that we'll be able to save and minimize using plastic. Recently, here in my place...somewhere in China, wherever I go I have to pay for the plastic bag where they will put the things I bought. Since I am a very thrifty and I save every bit in life that I can, I was able to save a number of good plastic bags. That is what I am using now if I go to the grocry stores.
What about in you place/country/wherever you are? Do you pay for the plastic bags that you use in grocery or department stores? Here, yes, it is 0.20 yuan (0.20 cents).

Hi leateagee
I'm in California, and we don't pay for plastic, well not yet. They have mentioned that they will start charging for every bag we use. And i believe it was going to be around 5 or 10 cents. What they should have done is keep paper bags. with the handle so that people could resue those, I believe they are better.

Well, I agree that paper is better. I don't mind using paper. That is good. I am sure, it is recycled. Thank you so much for responding. Take care =)

your welcome, though, they should have cloth bag, the good strong ones. I bet this would help a whole lot more.

while they havent dont that yet here in canada, some stores do make you pay for your plastic bags, but here in canada they are trying to do away with these bags. what we as a family do is to take cotton or canvas bags with us for our groceries and this also saves us money.

Thats great. Basically, people should not wait for government to pass a rule on this, if we love our environment, we need to make a move to make it safe. Thank you so much for responding. take care =)

I have never heard of charging for plastic bags but I think it's a great idea for reducing the amount of plastic bags that are littering the landfills.
Here in the US there is a lot of awareness for reducing the usage of plastic bags. All of the stores in my area are offering canvas type bags with handles for 99 cents. I have paid for four of these and I only use the plastic to wrap my meat products in so they don't leak all over. The reusable bags hold a lot more then the plastic kind.
Some of the grocery stores offer five cents for each reusable bag (subtracted from your bill) and 2 cents for each plastic bag you bring back and reuse.
Again, I have to say that charging for the plastic bags is a brilliant idea, because so many people don't bother changing their shopping habits.

Yes, the charging is a great idea. I just kinda freak-out because from where I originated its free and I didn't even think of changes that will happen after the passing of time. Canvas bags are great. You are right, it holds a lot of things. I support anything that concerns the environment so I am okay now with the charging of plastic bags. But I never heard yet of they paying you for returning the plastics. Thats great. Thank you so much for responding. Take care =)

Here in the United States, they aren't charging for plastic yet, but I live in a pretty environmentally friendly community, so who knows if they will soon. It seems like a good idea, but old habits are hard to break, I guess. My family personally uses mainly paper bags, which I guess is only marginally better than plastic, but at least it's NOT plastic.

One shop in the UK is starting to charge for bags (about $0.10) and donating the money to an environmental charity. Others give you incentives for reusing bags. I think all supermarkets should be forced to only have strong reusable bags available to buy and not be allowed to give any away for free. It will not only help the environment but should save them money - a saving which they might be able to pass onto the shopper.

That is a very good idea. A strong bag will surely not just help save our environment but saves our money too. Well, for me I already bought a strong bag which I use whenever I go to the grocery store. Thank you so much for responding. Take care =)

most of the local stores here in chicago are selling the reusable bags to "go green" and help the environment. my local ikea-the store who has everything! does not even give bags. you can buy reusuable bags for a small price but they will not supply any sort. it is to help eliminate the plastic excess. i think it is a great idea! i was absolutely amazed...

Yes, I know it is a great idea to discipline people from using plastic of any sort especially the bags. I was just shocked that I have to carry my groceries using my ten fingers, palms and some arms. LOL. Well, I am getting used to it now, I carry a cloth bag now, which I can reuse as many times as I want. Well, that is my way of saving money. Bring my own reusable bag. Thank you so much for responding. Take care =)

I live in the Philippines... and all the plastic bag to be used in supermarkets that i go to are free... we can use as many as we need... depending on the number of item bought... but just recently... supermarkets are offering green bags that can be used repeatedly... i have not purchased one yet... but i prefer the plastic... because i can always recycle them...

We don't have to pay for plastic bags but they give the option to buy reusable bags and even runs sales if you buy certain things you ge one free.
I think they make you pay or them so you don't turn around and throw those away.
I wish I had more. I don't mind using the resusable bags.

Apparently plastic bags are bad, so is paper, and exactly how am I supposed to carry my groceries? Oh, I know, I have to "buy" black cloth bags, yet another cost of "being green" that is sent to the consumer.
