How do you open a coconut ???

May seem a silly question but I have never tried this before, but just how do you open a coconut. I have tried googling for an answer, and all I seem to get is 'Hit it with a hammer'. Also one of the replies said to poke out one of the eyes and drain first, this I understand , but it also says that this is not coconut milk, but says I need to soak the inside flesh in boiling water to get milk. When I finally open a coconut can I just eat the inside white without having to do anything else. As you can tell I'm alittle confused so any help would be great

Hello,HADDOW!Take a coconut from the market.remove the fibers,or ask the shop keeper to remove the fibers.take home the coconut.hold it in your hand and thresh it on the ground with adequate force so that it will be broken in to pieces.remove the white substance from the cover and grind it to make a paste.add water to the paste,stare and drain out the milky substance.this is coconut milk.you can drink the milk,make ice cream of it,you can even add this milk with any vegetable curry.if you will dry this milk you will get coconut oil.the left outs of coconut can also be consumed adding some sugar with it.coconut is a nutritive fruit.the water of tender coconut is very delicious and hygienic.thanx.

I smack mine on the driveway ..yup..wiht a hammer! But you also have to have something hard under it when you smack it? The driveway is great!

Me. either... I just watch somebody open it. But it so hard to open it myself. strong arms are needed.
