I was watching the Travel Channel tonight and they had the program "Andrew Zimmern: Bizarre Foods" on and he was in Mexico in this episode. He had one dish that was Jumiles, which are also known as stink bugs. He said they tasted like tutti fruitti gum. I have these bugs all over the place where I live in the United States and they are called Stink Bugs. That is one of the last things that I would ever think of to eat, but he said that the Mexican people use them as a filling for tacos or just eat them plain. I had never ever heard of that. I was wondering, have any of you guys ever tried them or have you ever heard of them? I am just curious after seeing this episode. Here is a link to an article about them:

I am right there with you on that. I like regular food, and I don't want to eat bugs! But some people do. One time they brought in chocolate chip cricket cookies to my son's school and he ate it and came home and told me and I almost barfed!
Thanks for your comment!

hi schulzie.
yes, i've seen that episode as well and no, i haven't tried stink bugs but given the chance i'd love to eat a couple of those little critters. i'm quite adventurous when it comes to my culinary experiences so jumiles will suit me just fine.

These particular bugs are more plentiful in the montains around Mexico city. I have traveled to an city called Taxco where the locals sell them. I have spent much time there and honestly they do eat them! I will say that the tacos of beef seem to be in a higher demand and alot more plentiful. Personally after eating one off the grasshoppers dryed and sprinkel with chilli powder and lemon juice and A lizard tamalli which were really not that good. I figured I can do with out eating these bugs. As a form of protien if there is nothing else maybe in the old days or maybe in the future if things keep going up in price but not now. These types of foods seem to be more for the very poor who have nothing else and some of the old timers who grown up with them. But in modern reality they are more of novelity foods. Sincerely david

Thanks for your answer David. I have been to Mexico but only to Tijuana and that was years ago. I hope to go to Cancun soon as I have some friends who live there. I also want to go to Mexico City. My son's stupid Spanish teacher told him that Latinos cannot afford beef so they eat bugs. My husband is from Argentina and they are known for their beef. She is crazy!
Thanks again!

There is some truth to what your sons spanish teacher says but the only thing consistant here in mexico is inconsistancy. This is why they used to eats these bugs cause there was no beef and maybe why they may have eaten humans as well. Some poeple here are very poor and might need to eat these bugs. When I replyed I was generalizing. There is very Rich here like the richest man in the world Slim the owner of telmex and the very poor here like the kids that live in the parks in Mexico city. Regardless enjoy your travel to Cancun that is where the money is other than Mexico city. Enjoy the beach its very nice! sincerely
