Did you say you are buying a desktop and a laptop? Are you on a budget or not? LOL! May I recommend you choose either a laptop or a desktop. Desktops are cheaper IBM compatible-no brand)and relatively faster than laptops. But laptops are portable. The amount or RAM, speed or processor and hard disk capacity must be enough to run the operating system (vista/xp) and programs you will be installing. Best brands are IBM/Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba, Compaq.
Once you decide which you will buy, There are a lot of sites that compare prices and different models.

When it comes to computers, everyone has their own opinion. There is no better one really, it's all a matter of what you want to be able to do with it. Me, for instance, I am blind, and so need screen reading technology on my computers, so I recently bought a Mac Book that has an awesome built in screen reader. However, your needs may be different from mine. If you are needing accessibility for the blind/visually impaired I would definately say take a look at macs. They've come a long way over the past four years or so. If you are fine with regular pc's, Del laptop's are good, but for a desktop I would try to get one custom built if at all possible. If not by you yourself, then by someone you know, for that is the cheapest, most affective way to go in that reguard. I hope this information is helpful to you.
