We just got a new shih-tzu from a couple who didn't have the time or energy for this poor pup. He is about a year old, and has been an OUTSIDE dog since he was about 5 months. I know, I know... shih-tzu's are indoor dogs, but that was them. When we got him, his hair was all matted together, and we almost had to shave him bare! Now, he's an indoor dog but he smells soooo bad and has fleas. We have to bathe him every day. Does anyone have any tips on keeping him smelling fresh and getting rid of those fleas?

Yes I have 4 of the little darlings, mum, dad, son, daughter.
At one time when the litters were born there would be parents and 6 puppies.
They must be groomed everyday, trim scraggy hair and mine are showered once a week.
The best shampoo I have used is any baby shampoo,as they have 2 coats other shampoo's are not to good,I use a cheap shampoo, not a brand name.. Also to make grooming easier a conditioner, very mild again.
After they eat wash their beard with a flannel and sometimes if their food is sloopy food pin the ears at the top of the head.
Their eyes can get clogged with mess again this will smell so when grooming make sure you get right to the eye.
As for flees, first find the source, another pet,cat whatever,at the same time treat all pets, bedding, furnitur, no good just treating the dog.
The best treatment I have found is a liquid you pour on the top of the nck, sort of where the collor sits.
Hope that helps a little.
Of course the worse thing was that the dog was kept outside for a while, this will make the skin different more hardy and that alone with make a problem with smell..maybe after a while inside it will improve.

When we first got him, he was so scared to come inside! Poor thing... But now he is one of the family. When we are sitting on the couch watching a movie so is he! Thanks for all of the helpful advice! I'm definately going to try them all! :)

Hi my mum has 4 shih-tzu and you are right they are in door dogs the poor thing
my mum uses a human very mild shampoo because she has one that has very sore skin
so it doesn't brun his skin, she also brought dog deo which smells nice and it stays to smell for a few days the fleas all i can think of is the coller or the liquid.
they are such lovely dogs

Thank you! He is extremely adorable, but I can't wait until he gets his full coat back. He has a flea collar, but I am going to bring this up with his vet today as well. I know a lot of people use the drops from their vet, so hopefully we can work something out!

first thing i would do with a new shih-tzu is take him to
your vet for a good cleaning and de fleaing then get some
info from the vet on how to keep your doggie smelling clean
and fresh, and how to get rid of the pesky fleas then follow
the veterinarian's advice.
