Sidney Sheldon is one of the best suspense/ thriller writting noevlist. He has produced some of the finest novels, many of them have been best-sellers.
i myself have read few of his novels like
The naked face
Windmills of the Gods

Ive read a lot of sheldon's work too ..
I think he is great, but to be honetst he is more popular than he is good. Im not saying he is not great, what i am saying, reading a lot of authors and a lot of books, you sometimes tend to think that if a certain author did something differently, he/she couldve been better.
Anyways, no doubt it, his women oriented storyline, the twists and turns ... an ability to keep the readers hooked and the ability to never let his story lack in fun, substance and mysteries do make him a master of his genre.
The Stars shine down
Nothing Lasts Forever
If tommorow comes
are some of my favourites books by him.
Have a nice day.

What author you prefer is partly a question of personal taste, and this cannot be discussed, but partly it is also a question of literary judgement as to the quality of an author's -or composer, artist, actor, etc.- work. And this can only be acquired through comparing.
Generally, being a bestseller doesn't say anything about literary quality. That doesn't mean that those novels are worthless. I, for instance, read a lot of them: Sheldon, Ludlum... but one has to be aware of the fact that those novels are something like "fast food". Of course, there are the great exceptions to the rule when a class novel makes it to the top, as did "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (García Márquez) or "The Name of the Rose" (Umberto Eco)
Of the usual bestseller writers, I like best Grisham because of the way he depicts the American legal system. But then, this is a question of taste and, as already stated, one must not discuss about taste.
