June 26 - National Handshake Day

Ever encounter one of those “dead fish” handshakes! Eck! Creepy! Well a good handshake is important. Especially in the business world, where deals are finalized with a handshake and where a bad handshake could derail the whole deal! So don’t be a “dead fish” and take some time today to practice your handshake. A good, firm and dry handshake! I can relate to this one. At my daughter's school (elementary) the Principal actually teaches them how to give a good handshake and to look the person in the eye. He does this at the first award ceremony of each year. Now the school I sub at the principal doesn't do this and what a difference. I was at the 5th grade award ceremony and some of the kids had no clue what to do. I remember as a child, I was not taught this, and when I got out of high school I had a couple of awkward moments with job interviews.

When I was in school its amazing, but that is one of the things I remember we practiced regularly. I come from a farming area, so several of the classes were different than taught today. I had a class of learning to address people that including the proper handshake when you go out to the job interview and to get that first checking account. We went in pairs to learn how to prepare for things we would need to know in our lives. I think this was the most valuable class that I had in school. It should be a required class today. I can't remember the title, but sure remember those tasks that really helped me know exactly what to exact when I really needed many of them.

Now that I think about it, I think one of my business classes taught us some of these things, when I was in high school. Unfortunately, I don't think we will ever see it in the public schools again, with the current No Child Left Behind situation, all the emphasis is on reading and math.
