Dietary guidelines suggest an upper limit of 1,500 mg of sodium a day is adequate for us. But people consume more than that. When we take pickles and processed food we are consuming around 80% percent of the sodium we need. High intake of sodium will leads to some diseases like hypertension. A balance of sodium and potassium in the body should be maintained for to enhance nerve impulse transmission and to the balance of fluid in the body. To get a balance we have to add more food containing potassium like fresh fruits and vegetables. Good sources of potassium are fruits like oranges, banana, strawberries and vegetables like beets, greens, tomato etc

My mother used to cook with a lot of salt but she doesn't anymore. We rarely use salt anymore. Salt is important too for our bodies though. So there are just a few times when I would sprinkle some salt on my eggs but not all the time. And when my mother is cooking she just sprinkles a tiby bit of salt.
