The reason they request a Bank account is so they know where to deposit the $$ so you can have it to use if you choose to have it deposited that way. That is also another way of keeping track of you if you decide to buy anything off of the Internet via Paypal, so if you go over the amount left in your paypal account, they can get the rest from your bank.
I am not sure if it has to be from a Checking account or not. That is what they have for me, and have always had, and you have nothing to fear with giving them your information as it is secure. And if you want to not be limited on the amount you can have deposited in there a yr. you can always opt to get a Business account like I do, and I even have a Debit card to boot with them as well.
So the choice is yours, but I have been a member with paypal for quite some time now, and have never had any problems with them. Wishing you the best.

I'm fairly sure that Paypal doesn't do checks (cheques, whatever.)
To my knowledge the only thing you could do with earnings from mylot or the like would be to spend them online using the money (it'll go into a paypal balance) or register a bank account and have them transfer the funds into your account directly. (for a small fee.)
