The way things are going in the past few days there is high possibility of early elections. The government already done its bit to influence the voters (as much as possible in the inflationery environment) like loan waivers etc. Only thing the government is waiting for is election pay commission report implementation. Inflation is putting them in a quandry though. All the focus is on which party wants elections and which doesn't.
But no one is asking whether the public wants it or not. I haven't seen the media address this issue. What do the Indians want?

Nobody likes election due before the full term has been completed. But when a standoff situation like the one presently building up, it may be for the better.
The elections are anyway due in 2009. If the present govt falls, the earliest we can see is another election is Dec this year.
What will be unfortunate in the new elections is that if we get another situation wherein no single party gets a majority. Then we will land up in seeing a similar situation that we are in now, with the new Govt always having that noose round thier neck from their coalition partners

Of course, it is better that whatever is in national interest is decided upon. Election or no election.
