Have you ever dropped something on the floor or ground, picked it up and dusted it off and ate it anyway? I did today. There was an lone skittle in the car still in the package from the other day and I thought I would quick finish off the package..but when I tried to shake it out of the bag it flew out and onto the floor mat. I wasn't even thinking...just picked it up....dusted it off and popped it into my mouth! LOL...so have you dropped that last chip or other morsel, picked it up and ate it anyway?

Rofl I think we all do this from time to time. I almost always do it if the floor has been recently been cleaned, as long as I find it quickly. My mom and I have this thing called 5 second rule. If we can find it and pick it up within 5 seconds of being on the ground, we eat it anyway, but only if it's in our own homes. I guess we figure it hasn't been there long enough to be that big a deal. She started it when I was young. She never did it when I was very small because I probably would've gotten into the habbit of dropping my food and then eating it but when I got older, she started doing it. Now I don't drop my food often so it's still a rare occurrence but it does happen.

Yes I did this before. One time at work I had saved my last piece of candy. When I took the wrapper off, it fell to the floor, I picked it up dusted it off and ate it. When my daughter was around 5 years old she dropped her gum out of her mouth onto a dirty sidewalk, and was ready to put it back into her mouth but I stopped her just in time before she put it back in her mouth. I wouldn't put anything back into my mouth If it drops on a surface that is really really dirty.

oh yeah, even if the surface wasn't all that dirty, gum is sticky and so the dirt would just adhere to it. you can't just dust it off haha.

You are not alone with that. I do it and I will admit it. It might be a chip or like you a small piece of candy. Now something like cake, mashed potatoes or anything like that there is no way.

Oh Jill, I do this all the time, I think most people do, a little bit of dirt never hurt anyone, it helps build up a resilence to germs I personally think. The last thing I can remeber dropping is a chicken ball, luckily it wasn't covered in sweet and sour sauce at the time and it sort of rolled of the plate as I sat down with it on my lap, naughty girl I know I should eat at the table but I just picked up checked it ok and put back on plate. LOL...am sure most have done this even if they say ewwww I would never. I've done this. Or you drop you asprin or other med? Pick it up and blow it off. They did a thing not to long ago and aired it on tv about the dropping and the 5 second rule. Made me go ewww at the time but ummm I still caught myself doing it.

I won't do that because we have a dog and cat here and the house is continually full of hair. I can vacuum but still won't get it all up. If we didn't have pets I would be tempted to wipe it off and devour whatever it is I am eating. Alot of people live by the 3 second rule and I don't see anything wrong with it.

It's so awful around here have to watch where I sit. The dog is too small to get on the furniture but the cat does her share and they are both shedding something terrible this year.

I don't think I would either if I were you...when I had my dog his hair was so silky and light I would sometimes find it in my eyes in the morning when I put my makeup on. It just flew everywhere!

hi jill! that's a common practice here. and the common joke is "oops! no five seconds have passed! its still good!" we'd only dust it off, blow some unseen dirt, scratch it on our clothes, inspect it closely and then there it goes to the mouth. LOL however, if it lands on something wet, like water, mud, or any puddle of liquid, then its good to go, to the trash can. but if it landed on something really dry, and you can't see any dirt on it (at least those that cannot be seen by the naked eyes), then it is still good, it is still food and we don't waste good food.

Hi jillhill. What an excellent discussion as it brings to mind the "6 second rule." I must assume you've heard of it--the belief is as long as something is not on the floor for longer than 6 seconds, it is "okay" to pick it up and eat it. Interestingly, some university students did some research on the 6 second rule and found that it should be the "10 second rule." Yes, that's right, it's actually true. That if you quickly pick up the item before 10 seconds are up, the chances are good that it didn't have time to pick up any germs. No, I'm not kidding. It's for real. In answer to your question, I really never did pick something off the floor and eat it until I heard about the research. Now, if it's in my own kitchen and I know the last time I mopped it, I'll eat it if it wasn't on the floor longer than 10 seconds. Great topic! Take care. PearlGrace

Zhuraan, I am with you on that one. I'm not eating off of anyone's floor but my own! And I only do that if I just cleaned it that day. However, like I said in my original post above, some college students did some research on this issue and it was published. Pretty interesting, huh?

actually I have only ever heard 5 second rule, not 6. But either way, I don't believe for a second that it can sit there 10 seconds without getting germs. They are everywhere. However as I said before, if I am in my own place and I know the floor has been cleaned relatively recently then it doesn't bother me. I would never eat something that was dropped outside my own place though

I've done this in church. You know how you quietly try to open the candy wrapper, then the contents fall to the floor. Well, that happened to me with a mento, I scooped that little baby up and popped it into my mouth. "God made dirt and it don't hurt". LOL

Oh yes the 5 second rule. If it falls and you grab it and blow it off it is good to go lol. My daughter used to say "God made dirt and dirt don't hurt" whenever she would employ the 5 second rule.

I've done that a couple of times...but only if it falls on the floor at home. And that's only because I know that our house is swept and mopped each day. I wouldn't pick it if it fell on the floor in the car. It can be very dirty because our shoes go everywhere and we have all kinds of dirty stuff that we might have stepped on.

No, not since I was a litle kid. My mom was very good at telling my sister and I that the 'three second rule' didn't apply. After watching the Mythbusters show about that three second rule, and how much bacteria it really picks up, there is no way I will ever pick it up after dropping it. But I say ignorance is bliss. If someone doesn't know about the germs, more power to them. : )

Yes, I am guilty. I have enforced the 6 second rule more times than I can comfortably admit publicly. Mine is of the "waste not, want not" mentality. If I dropped a single gourmet jelly bean, a pack of wild boars could not keep me from it. Now, if it was liver or fish, I wouldn't find myself diving to salvage either from the floor.
