Do you like strange combinations of foods?

I like to eat cheese and apples together (I mean fresh apples with a bit of cheese alongside). I also think that a screw or two of black pepper enhances the flavour of strawberries immensely (and pepper is also good with vanilla ice cream). I have a recipe which calls for 1/4 pint of strong black coffee in a beef casserole. It sounds bizarre but everyone who tastes it wants more! Do you dislike the idea of sweet and savoury foods together or do you have your own bizarre combinations?

I really enjoy chocolate biscuits in a sandwich and always mix a pack of salted peanuts with maltesers. I like to keep my sweet and savoury separate apart from that.

Your combos sound perfectly normal to me! I will have pepper on almost anything - well, anything actually! Although I have not tried it on fruits other than mixed in cooking. The coffee in a beef casserole seems fine because it would be not much different from making stock with a Bovril cube or something. I invented beetroot and mint sauce sandwiches. I believe the story is about on the Interwebnet somewhere. There is nothing bizarre about cheese and apples together - is there? I love the idea of sweet and savoury together. It's brilliant and, not caring which foods are supposed to go together means that there are options when it seems we have little food left over. I quite enjoyed a recipe which I invented once. We almost always have a cupboard full of rice and dried herbs but I couldn't just do that, it would have been boring. So I also had a couple of apples which I chopped up and threw in and then added some cinnamon and then a stock cube to make a gravy sort of thing. Well, it turned out sort of Chow Mein-esque with the rice in gravy and was actually quite nice. I will try almost anything once and there are times when I am glad to do so for different reasons. Sometimes those reasons being because I invent something really tasty or for those times when I can't get anything extra in and have to see what fits. That's a lot easier when you don't miond trying different combinations.

I have some bizzarre likings too. I like salt on my watermelon, salt on my apple, sugar in my tomato soup, onion and sardine sandwiches, toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches, mustard and banana sandwiches. I can keep going but you get what I mean. I have never tried pepper on fruit or ice cream but I don't think it sounds too appetizing. Coffee in beef casseri=ole doesn't sound so good either, but I will think about giving it a try some day. I would have to have the recipe to know how to do it, because I don't think it would be good if I made it wrong. I like sweet and sour spare ribs. I make it myself and use sugar and vinegar in my tomato sauce.

Sometimes I crave pickles and ketchup with nothing else. And more than once I've just had to eat french fries with ice cream. Apples are good with peanut butter on them.

Oh I love cheese and apple too and have also been known to make a cream cheese and apple and raisin bap before. My favourite pizza is ham and pineapple and I absolutely adore sweet and sour chicken. I don't like coffee at all but it would be interesting to try in a casserole as they put chocolate in chille to enhance. Ellie :D

I like banana sandwiches, apparently it's a strange thing to like, I also like jam sandwiches. My youngest sister likes dipping chips into milkshake, I do think that's rather weird. Mr.Pandas Dad used to eat chips with jam on them, basically so as people would stop pinching them when he wasn't looking.

I try them when I hear about them but I've found that if they're not commonplace its likely that it doesn't taste all too good. Food combinations become popular when they're tasty. Otherwise they tend to remain with just a few people who might fancy the taste. How about Black Bean Sauce with scrambled eggs ? Or Avocado in soup ? I've done those and they're quite good. If you're into this you can try those two I mentioned. You might be surprised.

Thanks for the good discussion! I have tried cheese and apples and rather liked them together. I have not tried the others though. The strangest combo that I like is peanut butter sandwiches with spaghetti! I love these together. Most people have garlic bread with spaghetti, but not me! My other half grosses out everytime I eat it! I do also like coffee grinds in my ice cream! It is also very tasty!

When I was pregnant I loved hot cheetoes and dill pickles. I haven't had it since but I thought it was great. Also, fried shimp and hot chips.

Have you tried french fries with ice-cream or yoghurt? I didn't know about this, but I saw my nephews (8 & 5 years old) enjoying it so much, so I tried. Really good!

Apples and cheese go great together ! My strangest one, I think, is browinies and potato chips. I also like to make a recipie of beef stew, that you add regular mustard too, sounds strange but is very good. I also like potato chips dipped in cola, sounds even stranger but is also very good, something I started when I was a kid, but still catch myself dipping. My kids have seen this and tried it and like it as well.
