Perfectionist because of low self esteem??

I'm a perfectionist. I have to have everything just right. I just thought I was an over achiever but I was at church and the pastor gave a message about perfectionism. And how he thinks the root of it may be low self esteem?
I can't say that I agree with him and he doesn't say that's what the root is it's just his opinion.
Any thoughts?

I can see where he'd get that opinion. However I don't think I've read any studies about that. I try not to be a perfectionist. It just makes me unhappy because I can't attain perfection. So my theory is why try? lol
