I had a dog for 15 years when she became sick and very tired towards the end. The vetenarian sugguested we put her to sleep, but I just couldn't bear the thought of doing that. However, after several months her quality of life kept diminishing and she wasn't eating, drinking water, nothing, just suffering. So although I did not want her to go and went back and forth with what to do, I knew in my heart that I was doing the riht thing by letting her go and taking away her ain and suffering. It would have been selfish of me to just let her linger and cling to life the way she was. It was themost heart wrenching and difficult thing I ever had to do and I stayed with her the whole time. I know she is in a better place now and no longer in pain. I am not going to lie, it has been hard, and not a day goes by that I do not think about her, because she was a great dog, and an even better companion. I couldn't bear getting another dog, at least not that soon. It does get easier as time goes on and you start to remember the time you spent together and how happy they made you and eventually, when the time i sright and you are ready, and you will just know when that is, then you will get another dog and have another great, loving companion. The new dog will not replace the old dog in any way, but the new dog will help you move on.
